DISCLAIMER:Â This article does not only apply to the novices, but to the drink hardy veterans who need a refresher.
Â
Few college kids here at Miami are unfamiliar with the art form that has become “day drinking.” Whether or not you grace the many bar porches uptown or the grassy lawns of annex houses, most of you reading this article may have participated or seen these events unfold. Like any typical nighttime party, day drinking has its rules and guidelines one must be sure to follow.
Â
Clothing:
Â
DO: Make sure you stick to the theme of the event you’re attending. Day party outfits range from casual lax pinnies to classy Lilly dresses. Here are some tips to help you look your best: if it’s something casual like “Beer Olympics,” do wear your norts and Ray bans, and if you’re attending a “Wine Mixer,” or something of the sort, go all out with the floral, matching hats, and pearls (Lilly coozies go a long way, too).
Â
DON’T: If it looks like you’re doing a walk of shame, do everyone a favor and go home and change. Nothing is more anti- “Beat the Clock” than showing up looking like you just stepped off the runway. Don’t be the person who tries too hard, because let’s be honest: you’ll be drunk off $1 pitchers by 2 pm anyway. Ladies with letters… while we do love seeing your new Alpha House sweatshirts, stay classy and save them for class.
Â
Games:
Â
DO: Play high-energy games like boom and flip cup. These games can grow to any size, allowing a ton of people to get in on the action. Day drinking can often be awkward if you don’t know many people at the party, so make an effort to get to the game table and meet people. Playing these games allow you to meet the hottie you noticed bonging a beer by the speakers.
Â
DON’T: Games like beer pong and kings are often too slow paced and don’t allow for much interaction beyond the table. While pong is a staple party game, having only one game table at a party makes it difficult for many people to participate. Kings is great for the small get together and/or pregame since it’s more fun to make your friends drink than that rando sitting next to you. Lastly, don’t be the person at the games table who asks for directions every 3 seconds. Sit a round or two out and learn the game before you join.Â
Â
Party Etiquette:
Â
DO: Party etiquette is party etiquette. If you attend a party when someone other than the host invited you, take a second when you get there to introduce yourself (come on, you are drinking THEIR beer). Do be respectful of the house itself and don’t trash it. Most importantly, do have fun. You want your fellow day drinkers to remember your good moments as the girl who dominated in boom– not the girl who had to be carried home by 2 pm.
DON’T: Don’t be in the group of people who crash a party, and then stand in the corner. Not only is it rude, but you’re asking to be kicked out. Don’t be the person who day drinks into the night. So don’t over-stay your welcome. If you’re at the bars and notice that tight black skirts are surrounding you, it’s probably time to leave. Overall, don’t get sloppy. Go out and have a fun time, but keep under control so you can still enjoy the amazing Oxford nightlife.
Â
The rules of day drinking are simple and can be boiled down to one statement. Day drinking is a classic and fun Miami pastime, that if done right can lead to a great college memories. One last word to the wise: please drink responsibly.
