Ditch the Dating Websites, Lulu’s Got You Covered

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

Wondering how the guy you’re seeing treats his mom or if he’s a total dud?

Lulu is a free app that offers insight from guys’ friends, crushes, ex-girlfriends, and hook-ups to help you gain interesting information on boys you know. The app is synced to Facebook which allows the user to look up any male Facebook friends, it’s strictly anonymous, and only available for females.

When reviewing a guy, the user has to identify how they know them by specifying whether they are a crush, ex, friend, or hook-up. Guys are reviewed on a scale of 1-10 and are identified by handy hashtags that pinpoint positive and negative qualities. The hashtags are drop-box options for ladies reviewing the guys so that the users can’t just write whatever they want. Rating also includes a 1-10 point scale based on the guys’ humor, manners, appearance, ambition, etc.

The app has proven to be generally effective due to the fact that women are restricted by pre-made rating options. Of course, there are some bitter exes that will lie and say they are a friend and rate the guy poorly, but it’s usually obvious when this happens because if the user identifies herself as a “friend,” she most likely wouldn’t purposely engage in trash-talking or give a completely negative rating. Don’t be that girl, y’all. However, one has to be careful about the biases that can occur on Lulu because current girlfriends and ex-girlfriends will give extremely different ratings and it can sometimes be hard to get a real feel of what the guy is truly like. Although outlier opinions are inevitable, the app does allow all ratings to be displayed for those who are looking for information so it’s easy to see how ratings compare to one another.

One may find that many hashtags for a particular male are contradicting. For example, a guy that is labeled with a “Teddy Bear” hashtag may very well also be dubbed “Too Cool For School” by another user. Most girls are using the site to find good boyfriend material or to help a friend find a date, so for the most part it’s usually a good tool for rating men. Although HC advises not to rely on Lulu 100%, it’s a safe and easy way to get a quick reference of a guy, which could be helpful in your search for a keeper!
