Craving a wardrobe with spunk and bright colors? You sound like a Betsey Babe to me!
Â
We all have a girl crush, and for me it is the one, the only, Betsey Johnson! To prove my devotion, just check my desktop. I may or may not have an entire folder filled with photos of my favorite pieces of hers and pictures from her shows. Every bone in her body is unique!
From the instant you walk into one of her stores you are welcomed by walls of bright pink and a super enthusiastic staff that knows a Betsey lover when they see one. I like to consider myself one of those customers, and quite honestly, my dream career is to be working in some aspect of fashion or digital media for Betsey Johnson!
Anyway, for those of you who aren’t as head over (5 inch) heels as I am for Betsey Johnson, she’s an American designer, most regarded for her whimsical designs. She studied at Pratt Institute and was a sister of Alpha Xi Delta during her time at Syracuse University. It wasn’t until 1978 that she started her own fashion line. In particular, I admire her love of incorporating animal prints! Amazingly, as of 2011, she has over 65 stores worldwide.
On the average Betsey runway, you can spot tulle-girded tutu dresses from a mile away, but for Spring 2012, bubble skirt dresses seemed to be the trend. This year’s show had a central focus of celebrating and embracing the female’s body. The show was definitely a busty one, and Johnson was not afraid to have her models bare a bra strap here and there. Johnson commented that the creative vision for her show was inspired by Brigitte Bardot and the burlesque dancers of the 1940s. Needless to say her show was full of bright hues and a playful atmosphere, all you’d naturally expect from the woman herself! Given my obsession with all things Betsey, I am sure to never miss a sample sale in NYC. I’m sure you can imagine my excitement for the upcoming sales this summer (eek)! Samples sales are a great way to feed your desisgner appetite without getting too out of control.
