Campus Celebrity: Greta Hallberg

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

Say hello to Greta Hallberg, the senior Editor in Chief of Up, Miami’s only fashion magazine on campus. She’s a passionate leader who knows how to inspire her magazine team with her fun gifs and exuberant energy. She also writes for the Miami Student as a columnist, and just finished up her stint as treasurer of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She’s fun, friendly and full of ambition—all things we at Her Campus find worthy of praise. Keep reading to learn more about Greta, we think you’ll like her too.

Year: Senior

Major: Journalism and Economics

Hometown: Wayzata, MN

Her Campus: What do you do as EIC of Up?

Greta Hallberg: I basically come up with the vision and ideas for the issue and help people implement them. I do a lot of administrative stuff behind the scenes.

HC: How did you get involved with Up and what made you decide to run for Editor in Chief?

GH: I knew about the magazine before I even began my freshman year. On my first tour of campus, I happened to be in a group with UP’s advisor and she gave me old issues of the to take home. I was obsessed–I knew I wanted to get involved! I started blogging for UP my freshman year. Each year I’ve consistently grown in my involvement and sought leadership roles. I was encouraged by last years Editor to apply so I did!

HC: What goals do you have for Up during your time as EIC?

GH: One thing I’ve been really conscious of is bringing depth to our content. Fashion journalism is fun, but it’s also important to bring context to our reporting, too! We’ve been bringing in historical background on trends and addressing issues that plague the fashion industry while providing visually pleasing content as well.

HC: Is there anything specific that you would like to see in the magazine during your time as EIC?

GH: More diversity in our models. We’ve talked about this as an editorial staff. We had a few international students represented in our magazine, but I’ll be the first to admit that we need more women of color. And most of our models are stick-thin! I want to represent real people on campus and what makes them beautiful–that definitely does not have to mean a size 2!

HC: What is your dream job?

GH: I really want to host/report for a podcast some day. I’m interested in so many topics so I don’t know what I want it to be about yet, but I love audio journalism. NPR does such good work. I’d also love to run a style blog about fashion on Capitol Hill.

HC: What three words would you use to describe yourself?

GH: Quirky. Passionate. Creative.

HC: What do you like to do in your spare time?

GH: I love to do yoga, it’s my favorite way to relieve stress. I love to curl up with a book and a cup of tea. And I’m embarrassed to admit it but I get sucked into the depths of the internet very easily. I’m so susceptible to clickbait!

HC: What is one thing people may not know about you?

GH: I recently picked up cross-stitching! I feel like a grandma but it’s such a relaxing thing to do while watching TV or car trips.

HC: Do you have any advice for other students interested in taking on a leadership position?

GH: Always trust your gut and your vision. Be proactive–I met with last year’s EIC a bunch to learn about the role and what she does. That never hurts. And at the end of the day, just apply! Put yourself out there–you could be pleasantly surprised.
