Avery Tarrier: AXO President

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

Name: Avery Tarrier

Hometown: Upper Arlington, Ohio

Year: Senior

Major: Marketing

Minor: Interactive Media Studies

Hobbies: Any form of shopping, reading blogs, magazines, and a good book, cooking with my buddies, Snapchatting, spending time with my family and housemates at Melee, and anything that involves animals!

Favorite Place to Eat in Oxford: Krishna! I think I get it at least twice a week.

Favorite Fashion Magazine: Marie Claire, InStyle, or Lucky. I’ll admit I usually skip over the articles and usually just pay attention to outfits and accessories. It’s also my favorite way to find new stores and sites that I’ve never heard of.

Celebrity Crush: Adam Levine. There’s something sexy about a man that can sing in a higher pitch than I can.

Fun Fact: This question always gives me anxiety. Let’s go with the fact that I studied abroad in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and Taiwan!

HC:What made you want to become the president of AXO?

AT: I think that AXO is the reason that I love this school so much. I had a really rough freshman year at Miami and came dangerously close to transferring back home to Columbus. AXO made me feel like I belonged to something. The friends I have made in this organization are the most amazing, kind people I have ever met. They have seen me through some of the hardest and also most exciting times of my life.

I became the President of this sorority because I wanted to spread the feeling of belonging and love that I have experienced in AXO to as many other people that I can.

HC: What do you enjoy most about being a vital part of the Greek life here at Miami?

AT: I would hardly call myself a “vital” part of Greek Life here. There are so many amazing and influential people running this show, I just feel lucky to be a part of it.

HC: What advice would you give freshman that want to go Greek this year?

AT: ABSOLUTELY DO IT! Even if you go through rush and decide that Greek Life is not for you, you meet so many amazing people throughout the process. Like I mentioned, freshman year can be pretty lonely, and joining a fraternity or sorority makes the campus feel just that much smaller. Joining AXO was one of the best decisions I ever made, but being a member of Greek Life at Miami in general is absolutely amazing. It’s such a great community and provides you with countless networking opportunities.

HC: What are your future goals? And how has your leadership position with AXO helped you achieve your goals thus far?

AT: My future goal, other than to live a happy and healthy life with the people I love, is to go into the fashion industry. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a couple of internships in fashion and have had such an amazing time completing them. Few things would make me happier than a career in something I am so passionate about.

My leadership in AXO has really taught me a lot about what it will be like to work in a corporate setting. Being the President of a sorority is ultimately like having a full-time job…so there’s that. But most importantly, it has taught me the significance of effective leadership, the necessity of delegation, and also, no matter how hard you may try, you simply cannot please everyone—ever!

HC: What do you enjoy most about being the campus representative for Vince Camuto at Miami, and what might you consider to be the reason you got interested in the position?

AT: I LOVE having this position with Vince Camuto. I adore the brand in general. They have amazing shoes and accessories, but what I love most about the position is that I get to give away merchandise to Miami students ALL YEAR!

This summer I was fortunate enough to intern at DKNY in New York. My bosses there were actually the ones who told me about the position with Vince Camuto, and I couldn’t let the opportunity pass me by. Both positions have taught me so much about the fashion industry and have made me want to pursue a career in that arena even more.

HC: As a blogger for Collegefashionista, you must have to constantly be knowledgeable about fresh trends and developments in the fashion world. Who do you admire for their fashion choices? Is there a certain celebrity whose fashion you try to emulate?

AT: My mother has always been a huge inspiration for me when it comes to fashion. She has always instilled in me the importance of wearing what I like, not necessarily what’s trending at the time. I also admire my best friends for their fashion choices. They all have their own unique style that fits their personalities perfectly. My favorite style icon is, without a doubt, Rachel Zoe. She always looks perfect—always.

HC: What do you love most about Miami University?

AT: I’m sorry to answer this question with another question, but what’s not to love about Miami University? It’s one of the most uniquely amazing places I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing.
