While Jen Wood may not be at the front desk swiping you in, she is an essential part to the Miami Recreation Center.
Jen works downstairs with a staff of over 50 students, helping run the Rec center’s aquatic department. I have worked with Jen for the past two and a half years as one of the many lifeguards she looks over. She works hard and is almost always in a good mood at work. “Jen is confident in both herself and her employees and works hard to get to know the students she works with on a personal level,” Gabby Simeone, a Rec lifeguard, said.
I had the opportunity to sit down with Jen to discuss her experiences both inside and outside of the Rec:
HC: How long have you been working at the Rec?
JW: Since August of 2003.
HC: What other jobs have you had before coming to the Rec?
JW: I’ve been a lifeguard, swim instructor, and I’ve held internships. I graduated college and came straight here. I never thought I’d still be here.
HC: What is your job at the Rec?
JW: I am Assistant Director of the Aquatic Center. I am responsible for hiring and training of all of the lifeguards. I am responsible for running all the American Red Cross classes, CPR, Lifeguard.
HC: What made you decide to follow this career path?
JW: I enjoy aquatics and I think swimming is a great fitness tool and I like to learn.
HC: What is your favorite part about working at the Rec?
JW: My interaction with the students and patrons on a daily basis. When people come here they’re in a good mood, this is their break.
HC: Are you married?
JW: I have been married since 2007, but we’ve been together since 2002.
HC: What are your hobbies?
JW: Swimming and hanging out with my family especially my little son. My little 2-year old, Gavin.
