7 Ways College is a lot like High School

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

College: seven letters that can make any full time student sick. Seven letters that bring on stress, comfort food, and procrastination.

High School: ten letters that can bring back so many memories- designated seats in the lunchroom, desperately trying to be a part of the popular crowd (knowing that those people probably aren’t that cool anymore), and looking forward to the day we would graduate from whatever wretched placed we called our school.

We’ve all survived the enduring journey called high school, but do you really think that college is all it’s cracked up to be? Do you ever find yourself behaving like you did in high school?

Here are 7 reasons why college is just like high school:

1.   We still can’t choose what classes we want to take. Sure you get a few electives to pick, but you never really to take “any class you want.” Remember the days when your counselor wouldn’t let you take that extra art class? Yeah, that still happens here.

2.   There are still cliques. Take it back to ’03 when Mean Girls graced all of us for eternity (thank you, Tina Fey). Everyone’s high school had those groups, whether we like to admit it or not. We all know that Miami certainly has these groups too. The freshmen roll with the freshmen, or first-years if you find “freshmen” offensive. The athletes with the athletes. As well as every other friendship circle.

3.   We are still awkward as all get out. Let’s face it, none of us want to eat alone and be “that guy,” eating our food at Shriver with a sad puppy dog look on our face. Be honest with yourself, you are “that guy” the majority of the time. I mean this lovingly of course.

4.   Remember the days when you were constantly borrowing money from your parents, and you promised you’d pay them back? Remember the 36 times you went to the mall with your friends, and you seriously needed that shirt because your life depended on it? Our parents still financially own us. It’s a sad reality we all accept.  Now you probably just owe them more money than you can think of.

5.   Don’t lie, you still watch the Disney channel.

6.   You still chase the bus, not with a book bag, but maybe a few bags of groceries.

7.   Whether you do it with your parents or your professors, you can catch yourself brown-nosing a little here and there. Hey, we are all a little desperate to get what we want.
