College is often seen as a time of exploration, growth, and building a foundation for the future. It’s also a time in which many experience failure. Whether it’s a poor exam grade, a lost internship opportunity, or a project that didn’t go as planned. For some, failure can feel like a setback or a sign of inadequacy, but in reality, it’s an essential part of the learning process and personal development. Though discouraging at the moment, failure will allow for future success, but only with the right mindset. Here are some reasons why you should embrace failure during your time in college, and how to bounce back even stronger from it.
Failure can build self awareness. While humbling, failing allows for beneficial personal reflection. Identifying your strengths and weaknesses within study habits, learning style, career networking, etc. will provide a foundation for success in the future. By recognizing possible areas for improvement, you can develop strategies to improve your approach to certain tasks. This process not only builds confidence, but also allows you to effectively overcome future challenges.
Failure can strengthen time management skills. Procrastination is very real. The due date seems far away, so it seems insignificant. Soon enough, the due date is 12 hours away and the progress has been minimal. We’ve all been there, and sometimes the results are unfortunate. For shortcomings caused by lack of time management, some re-evaluation is necessary in order to not make the same mistake in the future. A way to help prevent procrastination is to break large tasks into smaller chunks. This will make the task less overwhelming and will allow you to spread out the work over the course of a longer time period, rather than cramming it all into one night and risking poor performance.
Failure allows you to seek out campus resources. Learning new content in a class can be challenging. Additionally, some classes in college foster a more independent style of learning such as building on concepts outside of class. This can be challenging to keep up with. If you find yourself struggling, seeking out resources on campus may be beneficial to get you back on track. Many professors have office hours, as well as student tutors who are available to help. Additionally, creating study groups with peers in your classes is a great option. Finally, the career center on campus has many helpful resources for networking and professional development. Whether you need guidance applying for jobs, resume review, or interview prep, the career advisors are available to help.Â
Everyone will experience a rough patch at some point in college, which is totally normal. Sometimes experiencing a setback is a necessary wakeup call in order to break bad habits. By identifying the cause, seeking out resources to help, and using the bad grade or lost opportunity as fuel to keep pushing, overcoming failure is totally possible. Setbacks in college are nothing to be ashamed of, and the way in which you bounce back from experiencing a failure shows true resilience. Although it may not feel this way at the moment, failing is a necessary part of the path to success.
