Before entering my Freshman year of Merrimack College I never saw myself joining a sorority, I felt like I wouldn’t feel connected. This changed the minute I got to campus and learned about Zeta Tau Alpha’s Philanthropy, Breast Cancer Awareness and Education. I immediately felt a strong connection because as someone whose mom struggles with Breast Cancer, it was so nice to see so nice to see a group of women striving to make a difference until one in eight women with Breast Cancer, is none in eight. When I heard about the leadership opportunities, I soon became the Community Service Chair. I later realized that our service goes above and beyond my previous expectations. We help so many other causes than just our Philanthropy. Here is how we serve, how sisterhood is connected to service, and how we will continue our journey in serving:Â
- Ways We Serve
Throughout the year, I have had the opportunity to plan and manage many Zeta Tau Alpha community service events. Some of these include: volunteering at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, making Valentine’s Day cards for cancer patients, gardening for the Salem Animal Rescue League, making dog toys for the animal shelter, a baby essentials drive to donate, participating in Mack Gives Back, walking in Relay For Life, bra drives to donate, and so much more. Our next event will be a campus wide bra drive taking place in the Sakowich Center on Friday, October 23, from 2:00PM to 4:00PM. These bras will be donated to a women’s center. The sisters of the Merrimack College ZTA chapter are willing and able to serve others as much as possible, and our goal is to help all different causes in all different ways.Â
- Sisterhood & ServiceÂ
In ZTA, we pride ourselves on our strong sisterly bond as a whole. One of the biggest ways we have been able to build this bond is through service. We have recognized that every cause means something to each sister, and we can work together to make an impact on each cause. Not only does volunteering and hosting service events together help others, it also helps us connect with one another. Being the Community Service Chair has shown me that sisterhood and service actually go hand in hand.Â
- Future Efforts
Our service and volunteering efforts have made a clear impact on surrounding businesses and communities, which is something that we would love to be able to continue for many years to come. We are constantly finding new ways to serve our community and the people around us who could benefit from our service. Our chapter values our service so much and the goal is to continue to grow and help others forever.Â
Zeta Tau Alpha goes above and beyond to ensure that we not only serve our Philanthropy to the best of our abilities, but also help so many other causes. I can confidently say that this is a huge part of our chapter’s identity, and my sisters do a wonderful job at ensuring that the past and future events have a positive impact on the community as well as the sisterhood of our chapter.
