Finals Week Style

Well, ladies, here we are again. The semester is winding down, and come the end of Thanksgiving Break, we’ll be in the last week of classes and then…finals. The stress of studying for exams, of writing that last paper, of figuring out exactly what your grade is to see if you really have to study at all, will eventually give way to the sweet release of Christmas break. It’s so close, and yet, so far! During all this, the women of Mercer will be rocking Finals Week Fashion. Here are some key pieces to look forward to.

Leggings

Throughout the rest of the year, leggings have made frequent appearances. Come finals week, however, you’ll see little else. Who has time to struggle into denim, to zip up the zipper, to button the button? You have more time to study when all you have to do is slip into a pair of leggings. Black is always a classic and goes with almost everything, while patterned leggings can add some visual excitement.

Sweaters

So, there are two kinds of sweaters. There are the fitted sweaters you wear for the business casual look when you’re going to a meeting, and then there are the over-sized sweaters that sit in the bottoms of your drawers until you call upon them for their comforting warmth and acceptance of all body shapes. Worn with a pair of leggings, you’ll be able to sit and work for hours on end.

Ponytails/Buns

Time is of the essence during finals week. During the year, you’ve washed and dried your hair with the upmost care, curled it, straightened it, nurtured and protected it. No longer so. Keep your hair contained in a classy ponytail or bun and add a braid for a quick, timeless style that’ll make leaning over your textbooks that much better.

Scarves

Fall has finally arrived and the weather is more and more consistently staying cold. It’s the perfect time for scarves! They can add to an outfit without much effort on your part, they help keep you warm, and in times of desperation, you can Audrey Hepburn it up and tie it over your hair to conceal the beast atop your head.

Boots

Boots and leggings are like the peanut butter and jelly of the fashion world. No fussy laces, added protection from the cold, and let’s face it – boots are always in. They slip on and off easily, making it easier to kick your feet up in the study room. You may be on paper-writing overdrive, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be comfortable!

Bags Under Eyes

There’s a lot to worry about when finals week rolls around – getting your work done, getting good grades, packing to go home, or, if you’re staying here, wondering what you’re going to do all break, and contemplating the state of your life presently and in the future. That’s a lot for a girl to worry about, but it’s something that we all go through. So after a couple nights of going to bed at 3 and waking up at 8, you’ll have bags under your eyes. Think of them like badges of honor, for your dedication to anxiety.

Pajamas

Sometimes, once you roll into bed, you can’t roll out of it. I mean to say, sometimes it takes all too much effort to take off your pajamas and put real clothes on. Thankfully, come finals week, pajamas DO count as real clothes! Wear your polka-dotted pjs with pride, throw a sweater on top, and rock that dorm room productivity!

Sweatpants

Should you find yourself unable to continue working any longer, and you have the urgent need to forage for food, sweat pants are your best friend, especially in this cold weather. Warm and comfortable, it’s like the dress-up version of pajamas for finals week. Wear them with a pair of comfy flats, and speed-walk yourself to the Caf or to the UC to grab some food, and then speed-walk it back to the library or your room. You go, girl!
