With Spotify wrapped officially being out, it may leave many of us questioning what our top artists, genres or songs are. Is it dominated by men? Does it favour one genre over another? Are you looking to find something new or different?

Well, it’s official. Rock is in its revival phase. With Hayley Williams and Paramore blowing up again, Avril Lavigne making her comeback and Miley Cyrus’ Plastic Hearts album. It is clear to me that the future of rock most certainly is female-dominated, and if Dave Grohl says so, then the rest of the rock world should listen. This summer I had the pleasure of seeing these insanely talented women perform live: Avril Lavigne, The Pretty Reckless and K Flay. They did nothing but prove that they’re stars and hardcore. The best thing about rock is its diversity and sub-genres so there is something for everyone. From classic rock, to indie, alternative and grunge, women rule it all and let’s be honest, they have for decades.

So, whether you want to discover more female artists in this genre, are already a rocker or are in your Taylor Swift reputation era and want to listen to bad ass women sing like goddesses, it’s time to add these artists to your playlists. Here are my favourite artists and bands fronted by women separated into the classic acts and the new school crew. Discovering music that has been around for decades is just as fun as finding what’s new on the scene.

Hi friends! My name is Jaimie, and I am in my fourth year at McMaster University for Political Science. I am a person of many hobbies that all seem to die hard at one point or another. But anything that can transport me is what I'm most passionate about, whether its reading, writing, music or shows and movies, I love it all.
