WHAT YOUR GO-TO STUDY SPOT ON CAMPUS SAYS ABOUT YOU

McMaster has a large variety of study spots on campus, perfect for every kind of student. Whether you prefer silence, chaos, or something in between, I believe your go-to study spot says more about you than you think.

. THODE BASEMENT

If your go-to is the Thode basement, you are locked in. I mean, locked in. You feel the most focused in a quiet environment. Quiet enough so the loud pop of you opening your fourth energy drink of the day can be heard across the floor. If you sit here, you’ve mastered the delicate balance of productivity, feeling tired, and crashing out all at the same time

. MILLS MEMORIAL, SECOND FLOOR

Let’s be honest, if Mills’ second floor is your go-to, you’re not really studying. You thrive in chaos and loud environments. If this is your comfort “study spot,” you’re probably sitting there with a room-temperature Tim’s iced coffee, your laptop screen hasn’t changed for the past half hour, and you’re deep in the debrief of the decade with your friends.

And honestly? Valid.

. BARBER MUELLER HISTORY OF MEDICINE ROOM, HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY

If you sit in the Health Sciences Barber Mueller Room, midterms have yet to take the spark out of you. You are a little whimsical and are looking to romanticize life. Maybe you’re a STEM student trying to reconnect with your inner humanities. Chances are, you grew up reading too much Harry Potter and like to close your eyes and let the spirit of Hermione Granger fuel you. You probably wish you could wand-wave your upcoming midterm out of existence.

I know I do.

. YOUR DORM ROOM

If you study in your dorm room, you are looking for the next excuse to hightail it from your desk to your bed. Let’s be real: you probably convinced yourself you needed a change of seating, only to end up curled under the blankets watching TikTok and fighting sleep five minutes later. You’re a person who trusts themselves to get things done. Sometimes, a little too much

You’re a particular person. The Goldilocks of studying, if you will. The temperature of the room can’t be too hot or too cold, your perfectly brewed study beverage to your side, the lights set to the perfect brightness: everything just right. But if that doesn’t work, you’ll be retreating to your bed soon.

And that is spoken from experience.
