Five Hidden Gems in Ontario to Add to Your Summer Travel List

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McMaster chapter.

COVID-19 restrictions are finally starting to lift in Ontario. I do not know about you, but I have been cooped up for way too long and am dying to travel again. As a student, I know many of us are wary of how pricey out-of-country vacations can get. But, did you know that you can visit some breathtaking travel destinations right here at home? Here is my list of the top five hidden gems you can visit in Ontario!

Southampton beach

Location: South Hampton, Ontario

This beach is probably one of the most beautiful beaches in Ontario. It has crystal clear waters and sandy shores. With warm waters, beautiful sunsets, food carts, and a historical boardwalk, what’s not to love?

Bonnechere caves

Location: Eganville, Ontario

A visit to these caves is the perfect experience for all the explorers out there. An excursion through the Bonnechere Caves is so much more than traversing through tight spaces. You’ll be able to see prehistoric fossils and other fascinating geological artifacts. Not only that, but outside the cave, you’ll be able to walk through a scenic trail with a sinkhole! An adventure here is sure to be a unique and memorable experience.

Perth, Ontario

Location: Perth, Ontario

Although this technically is not a specific location, you really have to check out the entire town of Perth! Trust me, it is worth it. It almost feels like you are visiting someplace in Europe. With its picturesque buildings, cute shops and signature Stewart Park, there’s no doubt that it’ll leave you feeling like the main character in your own fairytale.

cup & saucer trail

Location: Sheguiandah, Ontario

If you are looking for an adventure and love hiking, this is perfect for you! It’s no easy feat to reach the highest hiking point, appropriately named “The Cup and Saucer” for its shape. This will involve a fair share of clambering and ladder climbing, but the view at the end is worth the struggle. You’ll oversee one of the most spectacular landscapes and surely gain a newfound appreciation for nature.

The Grotto

Location: Tobermory, Ontario

The Grotto is perfect if you are looking for a vacation with a luxurious, tropical feel right here at home! Although it takes a 45-minute hike to reach the destination, the surreal cerulean blue lagoon and cave structures make it worth your time. Ontario? More like the Caribbean.

Summer will be here before you know it, and it is never too early to start planning! Hopefully, you will be able to enjoy one of these incredible destinations very soon.
