A Talk with the Leader of the Largest Cultural Club at McGill

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Melody Zhou for HerCampus McGill (HC McGill): First, tell us a bit about yourself.

Kathy Lin: My name is Kathy Lin, I’m in U3 (3rd year) and my major is Anatomy & Cell Biology.

HC McGill: What is your position at MCSS?

Kathy: I’m the co-president.

HC McGill: How did you hear about MCSS and what made you want to join?

Kathy: I went to MCSS ski trip in my first year, and I was amazed by how closed the execs are. They were like a family rather than simply working together. One of my really good friends was in MCSS as a first year rep, and he encouraged me to join the “fam”.

HC McGill: How has MCSS made your experience at McGill better?

Kathy: Being a part of the exec[utive] team helped me to get out of my comfort zone. I was very shy in my first year, and I basically just stayed in my own friend circle. After joining MCSS as a project manager, I was forced to meet new people and even lead teams for a lot of events. I could see how much i grew in the past one year, both in a professional and personal perspective, and this personal growth encouraged me to take one more step forward to be the co-president of MCSS. I am still learning how to do a good job on this position and facing challenges everyday, but MCSS helped me by pushing myself to reach  potential that I have never thought [possible] before, and this is something that lectures can never [teach] me.

HC McGill: What is MCSS and what does it do?

Kathy: MCSS is the largest cultural club in McGill. What makes MCSS different from other student societies is our event[s]. MCSS never only focused on a certain type of event, but rather combinations of both traditional and pop culture into our creative and inclusive events. From Running Man to Casino Night (All You Can Drink) to Ski Trip to Lunar New Year Night Market, we host more than 10 events each year. MCSS hopes the events we host will foster a feeling of community and acceptance that will spread around the McGill campus.

HC McGill: How can members of the McGill community get involved?

Kathy: They can attend our events and get to know new people!

What upcoming events does MCSS have that I should look forward to?

Kathy: Casino Night, Ski Trip, Valentine Event – Be There or Be Square, Lunar New Year Night Market, and the Cuba Trip.
