St. Vincent Designs New Guitar For Women

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Music star St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) just designed her own guitar, one that is specifically geared towards women who want to slay just as much as she does onstage. The guitar is, in her own words, “a tool that would be ergonomic, lightweight, and sleek” and also has “room for a breast. Or two” (Co.Exist). The design of the guitar combines a retro aesthetic with a ’67 Corvette color scheme (Esquire). It gives the guitarist just what she needs for optimal jamming out, weighing less than the standard guitar so it is easier to handle, and offering a slim shape that shows off her waist and costumes. This newly designed guitar pulls away from the standard, vintage, heavy guitars that guitarists have been lugging around, and offers a new model that better fits smaller body shapes and unique playing styles. While this guitar is specifically meant to fit and enhance the female figure, it is also geared towards people who just want a more comfortable guitar to play (Co.Exist).

Clark’s experiences with guitars have played a very pivotal role in her life. “The guitar can be so many things for me. In my life it’s been a shield, a weapon, and a vehicle by which I’ve been able to have an incredible aristic and emotional life.” The guitar serves not only as a fashion statement, but also as a central component to Clark’s performances; thus, the unique accomodation of her guitar is crucial. Clark worked with various designers to fulfill her vision of the guitar, primarily in collaboration with the Ernie Ball music company. On top of being more accomodating, her guitar design is also very innovative–the wiring of the guitar is non-standard, with a a five-way switch that allows the player to mix the guitar’s 3 pickups in combinations that are not usually possible (Co.Exist).

This new guitar is definitely one to be on the lookout for. The guitar model will be released in March, so if you’re looking for a new and innovative instrument to jam out with, keep your eye out!
