Squash Tournament at McGill Highlights Growing Popularity of The Sport

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

This weekend, McGill hosted the Quebec Jesters University and CEGEP Tournament. Sanctioned by Squash Quebec, the tournament capitalized on a small but popular niche of athleticism that is conspicuous throughout the university and the province. McGill has its own intramural squash team, but the tournament was open to any university or CEGEP student in the area. The men and women participating ranged from seasoned pros to newcomers, and it was thus a great opportunity to bring squash players of all levels to the courts.

Though not a classically popular sport like hockey, squash is highly enjoyed among a sizeable chunk of the university student population. It is considered to be one of the healthiest sports to play, taxing the cardiovascular system as well as both the upper and lower bodies. In addition, there is a growing movement to have it accepted as an Olympic sport.
