Snow Time: Reactions to the First Snowfall of the Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

When I woke up this morning, the first thing I did was go downstairs to get a cup of coffee, as usual. I went back upstairs to my room and sat at my desk to study. Half an hour later I decided to take a break and looked out the window. That was when I realized it was snowing. Seeing my neighbour’s rooftops and my backyard covered in snow suddenly made me panic. I was not expecting snow. I thought about the previous night when I had finished work at around 11pm and it was freezing outside. My car was covered in ice from the rain and it took a while for me to manage to open the door. Still, I hadn’t been expecting snow.

I realized I did not have any winter boots since my old ones were too worn out. The week before I had looked around in stores and found a pair I liked it but decided not to buy them, thinking it wouldn’t be snowing for a while. But the thought of going to school the next day and knowing how much walking I had to do on campus really made me nervous.

That afternoon, my mom, my brother and I decided to go a shoe store to look for new winter boots. As we entered the store, I realized I had never seen a shoe store this crowded before. There was barely any space to move without bumping into someone and the line at the cash was so long that it extended around the store. Even on Boxing Day, I had never seen a store as packed as this one. It felt like my entire town had decided to come to this particular store on that day. Everyone looked so stressed out trying on multiple pairs of boots, and that was when I realized how funny the whole situation was. Only Montrealers can have such a reaction to a tiny snowfall. We all know the struggles of winter here to the point that a little bit of snow sends all of us shopping for a warm coat, cosy boots and a thick scarf.

When I got home, I decided to check the weather forecast for the upcoming week. Sure enough, no snow was predicted for the next few days and the temperature for some days was even as high as 8 degrees. So typical of Montreal’s weather!

Many of us might be dreading the glacial cold and the meters of snow that await. But hey, at least we know that the holidays are around the corner!
