Review: Ecole Privee

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Anyone who knows me well knows that going to clubs isn’t my most preferred way to spend a night out. A typical Thursday night usually consists of me getting my money’s worth of $1 beers at BdA, followed by a trip to Gert’s (and if I’m feeling really adventurous, maybe even Apartment 200). However, last week I had the chance to visit Ecole Privee, and it may have just become my new favourite place to go out

Ecole Privee is a relatively new club, located at the corner of St. Laurent and Milton. If you’re going there for the first time, it’s best to go with friends who know where it is, because it is definitely easy to miss- there’s no signage. In fact, it’s located directly across from a gas station. This might be enough to throw some people off, but the interior is the complete opposite of the exterior vibes this place gives off.

The decor is chic, simple, and minimalist, with a black and white colour scheme, accentuated with more vintage pieces from the heavily crown-moulded bar to the plush velvet seating.

The dancefloor is located right in the center of the club and surrounded by two bars with ample seating. There’s even a little room off to the side, where the walls are covered exclusively in old photos of naked women. Chances are, if you’ve seen a friend instagram a photo at Ecole Privee, it was taken in that room

The music can change depending on if a special act is set to play on a particular night, however, it is usually just old club favourites, remixed for the dance floor. The usual crowd is definitely a lot older and less saturated with university students (compared to say, Tokyo) but it’s fairly common to run into 1 or 2 other people you know during a night out there.

One of the biggest drawbacks is the price. It’s usually around a $10 cover, and the drinks are comparatively expensive. One bottle of Corona set me back $8 (at which point I was really missing my $1 beers). However, if you do decide to ball out and get bottles, they are delivered to you by lively bartenders, complete with a set of sparklers, adding to the fun vibe of the club.

If you and your friends are looking for a fun, slightly more “adult” way to spend your nights out, Ecole Privee is the perfect spot for you. Perhaps I’ll even see you there next week.
