Attention first years! It’s nearing the end of the school year and Her Campus McGill is here to make sure you’ve discovered everything on campus.  McGill and Montreal offer a wide variety of food choices for students every day of the week. If you haven’t been to these places yet, be sure to check them out.

Student Run Café (SRC)

The Student Run Café is a newly opened café that can be found on the second floor of the SSMU building. The concept behind the café is to allow students the opportunity to serve other students, providing a more direct feedback loop for students than is typically expected from other places. More importantly, the menu is customizable based on dietary needs and the opening hours can be adjusted based on the feedback they receive from students.

In order to promote sustainability, the menu emphasizes foods that can be grown seasonally during a given year. For example, they currently feature local foods that can be grown in Quebec during the winter, such as the “spiced carrot and ginger soup”. The café offers two burritos (one veggie and one meat) and one quiche daily, along with a daily menu that offers delicious soup and sandwich options.

Check out their website here.

Snax

Snax is located on the first floor of the Leacock Building. Before the Student Run Café, Snax was the only student-run food service business on campus. Snax prides itself on its main product, coffee, which has allowed them to stay open for over twelve years. The concept is to grab something to eat between classes to keep students fueled, as there are no places to sit down.

Popular items include a wide variety of organic, local foods, as well as baked goods, vegan burritos made by the Burrito Project, and vegan BLT’s made with smoked coconut. Snax also caters to students with dietary restrictions as they offer vegan and vegetarian options. Snax hopes to increase their sustainability footprint as they are encouraging students to bring their own mugs and as they begin using compostable, recyclable mugs. In addition, they offer a wide variety of Organic Campus products. Snax is open Monday-Friday 8 am – 6 pm.

Super Sandwich

Super Sandwich is an off-campus place to grab a sandwich if you are really in a hurry. Located at 1115 Rue Sherbroook Ouest inside Le Cartier building, it is a staple for many management students. They pride themselves on offering a wide variety of delicious sandwiches, ranging from cold cuts to chicken salad, as well as their speed of service (oftentimes less than 5 minutes). In addition, the prices there are unbeatable. The downside, however, is that you only get two dressing options – mustard or mayonnaise. Further, you don’t get the variety of toppings you would typically see at Subway, with only lettuce and tomatoes as choices.

McGill Royal Victoria College (RVC) Dining Hall

The dining hall is located in the basement of the RVC residence hall located at the corner of Rue Sherbrook and Rue University. The dining hall has an incredible amount of variety and is always packed with students during lunch and dinner. They offer daily plates, grilled foods, burgers, sandwiches, salads, soups, sushi stir-fries, fresh fruit, and desserts on a daily basis. They recently fot a soft-serve frozen yogurt machine that serves delicious vanilla and chocolate frozen yogurt, even during the winter months. Despite their variety, the prices are quite steep for any student that is no longer on a meal plan. However, the choices at RVC are healthy and it is only steps away from both Roddick and Milton Gates.

Lola Rosa

This quaint little place is an off-campus vegetarian restaurant located at 545 Milton Street, just steps away from Milton Gates. Even if you aren’t a vegetarian, the menu is incredible. They serve a killer nacho plate and quesadilla option, both of which are of course vegetarian. They also offer a variety of other options, most of which are served with a side of salad and rice. They are listed as a recommended place to eat from Trip Advisor and on many nights, even in the harsh winter months, the line is out the door.

Smart Burger

Smart Burger is a greater burger joint located at 896 Rue Sherbrooke Ouest just across from the Roddick Gates. The concept behind the restaurant is to “eat smart.” Their beef burgers are made from 100% AAA Canadian fresh beef that is ground and grilled right in front of the customers. They also offer a juicy, marinated chicken breast burger and a homemade veggie burger as well. Everything tastes delicious, is reasonably priced, and most importantly, is so close to campus.
