New City Gas: The New Heart of Dance

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

In the spirit of what I heard was one killer performance by Calvin Harris, rather than reviewing a concert, I choose to review a venue. A venue that is huge, new, and utterly spectacular. That venue, is New City Gas, the new and improved concert veue for all things electronic.

Situated by Montreal’s neighbourhood Griffintown, New City Gas has been attracting some of the biggest and most popular electronic DJs since it’s opening last May. Their first event featured electronic DJ powerhouse Moby and has since featured killer acts such as Porter Robinson, Benny Benassi, Alesso, Axwell, and a slew of other favourites. I’ve had the pleasure of attending concerts at New City Gas twice: once for electro-house explosion Porter Robinson and the other for French producer Joachim Garraud. Needless to say, disappointment did not grace my vocabulary either time.

The venue itself was built has 1859 — hence the majestic exterior. The interior, however, is in perfect contrast to its older outside, with an incredibly chic and modern design. New City Gas has an outside terrace (with handy heat lamps for the winter) for those who wish to relax from the electrifying chaos of what is the dance floor, which alone is amazing. The room where the magic happens is remarkable: a long floor, high ceilings, and one incredible looking layout. Where the DJs perform there is an immense screen that displays a variety of visuals all suitable to the DJ who is performing. The variation from performer to performer is incredible, giving each experience at New City Gas its own personality.

If all of this just sounds exactly like the type of venue you’d like to go to, you’re in luck! With Halloween coming up there are naturally a slew of shows to go see. Dutch trance DJ Ferry Corsten will be playing October 26, progressive house DJ Tim Mason will be there on October 27 along with a costume contest (so dress to impress), and finally South-American house DJ Erick Morillo with be spinning on all Hallow’s Eve, October 31. So take your pick! A venue like this in such an incredible city must be experienced.
