Keeping it Cozy: 6 Comfort Foods to Chase Away the Winter Chills

Winter is fast approaching, leaving us all with one primal concern: how to keep warm. Although sweaters and scarves may be the obvious solution, they don’t exactly warm you up from the inside per se. To warm yourself up from the inside, arguably, the best way to go is through your stomach. With that being said, here is a list of 6 foods and drinks that are perfect for keeping the winter chills at bay.

1. Cinnamon Rolls:

Warm cinnamon rolls are among the best things that you can treat yourself to on a cold winter day. They’re sweet, soft, and delectable — the very definition of comfort. They’re fairly easy to make, and there are recipes all over the internet. Moreover, you can adjust the recipe to suit your own tastes. Still hanging on to that autumn feel? Add some pumpkin spice. Craving a shot of sourness? Add some apple. Want something just a little bit sweeter? Top off your batch with some cream cheese icing.  

2. Mac n’ Cheese:

Macaroni and cheese is a classic comfort food, and it’s perfect for winter because it also happens to be a hot one. This one you can also make yourself, or you can easily find it usually for a pretty cheap price at a nearby restaurant. You can get a bowl for $5 from Cinko if you’re down near St-Denis!

3. Hot Soup:

This is also relatively easy to make at home, but also easy to find at any fast-food stop nowadays. If you feel like your insides have been gelled over by the frigid winds outside, a hot bowl of soup for lunch will definitely warm you right back up.

4.  Japanese Ramen:

We’re finally getting to the fancy part of this list, where you might not necessarily have the cooking aptitude to simply make these dishes yourself (so no, Japanese ramen does not refer to the instant kind). Long, thin noodles, hot broth, and those perfectly soft-boiled lava eggs — it’s the perfect tummy-pleaser after a busy day of running around campus while the temperature bitterly lingers below zero. Yokato Yokabai and Kinton Ramen are my go-to’s if I’m ever craving authentic Japanese ramen.

5. Chocolate Fondue:

Just the thought of chocolate fondue makes me warm inside. The smooth, creamy texture of melted chocolate matched with a set of freshly cut fruit, waffle bits, and marshmallows is the ultimate treat for any frozen soul. If you drop by Cacao 70 on Parc, you can even roast your marshmallows on your own grill before dipping them into their irresistible fondue. 6. Hot Chocolate:

To round off the list, I have included the must-have winter staple: hot chocolate. It’s almost magical how much joy can come out of a single mug of steaming hot chocolate after an evening out in the cold. It’s the perfect drink for the company of friends and equally enjoyable by yourself in front of your TV screen too. Don’t forget to add the marshmallows and whipped cream!
