Highlights From the 2018 Pyeonchang Olympics

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

With 11 gold, 8 silver, and 10 bronze medals, it is safe to say that the 2018 Olympics this year was a moment for Canada to truly shine and an opportunity to boast our fellow athletes representing us all the way in Pyeongchang, South Korea. With the intense and exciting year of Olympics to an end, let’s take some time to recap some of the highlights for Canada this year.

Still a sore subject for many of us, the loss of the men’s hockey team against Germany and the women’s hockey team losing gold to the U.S. team was a bit of a shock and sad moment for all of us. But we still had so much to celebrate. As Canada’s sweethearts and most beloved pair right now, (I mean, they claim they’re only business partners but we refuse to believe it) Tessa and Scott snagged their well-deserved gold as we saw them dance beautifully together on the ice.

Another defining moment for Canada this year was the brilliant comeback of Mark McMorris – the 24-year-old snowboarder who nearly faced death almost a year ago after crashing into a tree. He faced severe injuries including a collapsed lung and fractures in his ribs, jaw, left arm, and pelvis. Needless to say, many Canadians were shocked and filled with pride as McMorris managed to take home a bronze medal.

Another Canadian athlete that exemplified true bravery and hard work was Kate Osmond. In 2014, similar to McMorris, she also suffered injuries that had a large impact on her career as an ice skater. With a broken fibula above her ankles, she was terrified and devastated as she thought about ending her ice skating career. But despite her fear, she chose to get back up. She had to start from scratch- she used boards to support herself on ice. And now 4 years later, she skated beautifully with grace and proudly took home a bronze medal.

The Olympics is an exciting time for all countries around the world. It is the time for countries to celebrate and honour the hard work and efforts that their athletes put into to be able to proudly represent their countries. This year, in the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, us Canadians were filled with pride and joy as we were reminded again of how brave and hardworking all of our athletes were. So, with that being said, 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, we’re coming for you!
