Dumbledore to Reappear in Fantastic Beasts Franchise

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Get excited Harry Potter fans, because one of your favourite characters is making a reappearance in the upcoming movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The movie, which opens in theaters this November, is a prequel to the adventures of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, taking place in the 1920s – 70 years before their time. J.K. Rowling, the author of the beloved franchise, has hinted at the fact that a young Dumbledore will be featured in the film, alongside the darkest wizard of all time – aside from Voldemort – Grindelwald (Dark Horizons). Director of the movie, David Yates, followed up by saying, “We can’t tell you…because we’d have to kill you, but we do mention Dumbledore and he features in a wonderful scene…” (BBC).

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the first in what Rowling announced will be a five-movie franchise (BBC). In a recent interview, Rowling said, “I’m not allowed to say too much but I can say one thing… we were doing some script sessions the other day, and we always knew it would be more than one movie. But I’ve now done the plotting properly, and we’re pretty sure it’s going to be five movies” (Attitude). Extending the franchise to five movies, she hopes, will allow for more ties to the Harry Potter franchise (Dark Horizons). She also says that Grindelwald will have a more prominent role moving forward in the new series, and that there will be more insight into the dynamic of his relationship with Dumbledore before their falling out (BBC).

As expected, fans of the original eight-movie Harry Potter franchise are bursting with anticipation for this new franchise, one that will surely keep the spirit of the magical wizarding world alive. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in theaters on November 18th.
