CoverGirl Uncovers their Newest Brand Ambassador: Muslim Beauty Vlogger and Contour Queen, Nura Afia

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Daaamn CoverGirl, back at it again with diversity! All bad popular culture jokes aside, the brand has been making some serious moves towards a more inclusive image; just a few weeks ago CoverGirl introduced us to their first-ever male spokesmodel and fresh face of their makeup line, James Charles. Now, CG is proud to present their newest brand ambassador, the stunning and talented Nura Afia.

Not only is the Denver-based beauty vlogger an obvious choice with over 200,000 YouTube subscribers to her channel Babylailalov, over 300,000 loyal followers on her Instagram account @nuralailalov, and her knack for a mean smokey eye, but she is also a groundbreaking and a long overdue one at that. Nura is the first-ever Muslim ambassador and hijab-wearing woman to be welcomed to the CoverGirl family, joining James Charles, Amy Pham, Halle and Chloe of Sugar Symphony, as well as Sofia Vergara and Katy Perry. As the makeup brand works to promote their newest So Lashy! Mascara as part of their #LashEquality campaign, Nura, who is Moroccan, Swiss and Lebanese – not to mention both stunning and skilled – is the perfect woman to break down beauty barriers, and it’s encouraging to see brands finally begin to embrace beauty in all its uniqueness and diversity. Although this responsibility should not fall on her shoulders, Nura’s presence in this campaign and the brand at large helps to send a message that she is deserving of her seat at the beauty table because she is a skilled makeup artist; just as importantly, her beauty is one that we don’t see often enough in mainstream cosmetics, and is thus a necessary addition to the CoverGirl team. With her innovative hijab tutorials that incorporate everything from how to work a low bun into your look, to which brands she swears by for her butterfly-like lashes, Nura ensures her followers always look ~flawless~ while diversifying mainstream beauty. Talk about a win-win.

Though she has already racked up an impressive following as an Insta-famous makeup guru, Nura didn’t quite picture herself becoming a globally recognized influencer, but that’s exactly the direction CoverGirl is taking her in. “I never thought I would see Muslim women represented on such a large scale,” Nura confessed in a recent interview with Glamour. Now, the makeup artist’s how-to videos that once promoted her unique #MUOTD techniques are about to get the viral treatment in order to broaden society’s narrow notions of beauty. In short, Nura stands out for all the right reasons, and is helping to make beauty industry history, one tutorial at a time. So keep your beautifully-lashed eyes peeled for the CoverGirl commercials and campaign content airing this November!
