Celebrate Yeezy Season With 5 of Kanye West’s Best Pump-Up Jams

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Rejoice collegiettes, for Yeezy season is upon us once again!

In the past week, Kanye West has been all over the news, feuding with Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose. Yet, in the midst of this recent drama-fest, he is also preparing the release of his first album in almost three years!

Since releasing Yeezus in 2013, Kanye West has been a bit busy: he married Kim Kardashian, he became a father twice, he did the Yeezus tour, and created the self-proclaimed masterpiece that is now being released on February 11.

This album was once called So Help Me God, then it was called Swish until this week when it got switched to Waves (which is also the name of a track that is going to appear on the album). What we do know for sure is that Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper will be featured, and that, according to Yeezy himself, it will be the “greatest album of all time.” We now also know the names of all the tracks, and that “Kylie [Jenner] was here.”’

Last year, while I was studying abroad, I challenged myself to listen to Kanye West’s full discography. I thought that the new album would be coming out at some point while I was in England, but of course it did not. One year later, I finished my challenge (later than I had originally hoped), and Kanye finished his album.

So before we all go indulge in the mastery that is Waves, let’s prepare for it the best way we know how: with some classic and underrated Kanye pump-up jams, that I picked out throughout my mission.

1. “Power”- from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Want to feel like a ruthless villain or Wolf of Wall Street for four or five minutes? Then, this is your song. “Power” is the ideal song to play before strutting into an exam, interview, or meeting, and crushing it.

2. “Champion”- from Graduation

Graduation is full of songs of strength and sass: this is, after all, the album that has “Stronger”, “Good Life” and “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” amongst its tracks. Nonetheless, I chose “Champion” because it is a more underrated Kanye track that is a celebration of pride and triumph. Most of all, I love how its hook works off this epic line: “Did you realize/ that you were a champion in their eyes?”

3. “Touch the Sky”- from Late Registration

I don’t know about you, but this song was the hottest bar/bat mitzvah and elementary school graduation jam of 2006. Ten years later, this song is still the perfect mood booster. It is an upbeat reminder of all you’ve accomplished, and all the infinite heights you have yet to achieve.

4. “All of the Lights”- from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

What’s not to love about this one: all the guest vocalists and rappers, all of the horns, all of the actual lights (see the music video for proof of that). This song is bound to pump you up for a big time event, the kind that you worked so hard to prepare and show to the world.

5. “I am a God”- from Yeezus

OK, so the end part with the screams may not exactly be comforting, but nothing says fierce like this song’s classic line: “Hurry up with my damn croissants!”
