I always thought colourblocking as a risky trend to pull off, considering my style is more mono-chrome based; however, I realized it is also one of the most fun trends that everyone should try out. Forget all the rules of how this colour doesn’t go with that color, and you shouldn’t be wearing red with green, or yellow with pink – colourblocking transcends all the rules of fashion by permitting fashionistas to wear multiple solid colours in one outfit (the crazier and bolder the colours, the better). Colourblocking is all about having fun with it – pairing colors that usually wouldn’t go together, and rocking them with confidence. Although there are techniques to colourblocking, and pairing certain colour schemes together would be more aesthetically appealing, playing around with different colours is essential to it, and it is possible to make any and all colours look good together.

Meet Erica Blume, a second year student double majoring in Italian and art history. (Funny that her colour schemes are those of the Italian flag). When I told her that I wanted to get her photo for the blog, she thought she was repping the Christmas colours a little too early, but I thought otherwise; it’s never too early to be in the holiday spirit. And plus, why do red and green always have to represent Christmas? They are just really great complementary colors – especially for an outfit! All that aside, I loved her two-toned red and white sweater with scalloped detailing, and though her forest green jeans may seem like a daring choice, I think they worked well with the rest of her outfit… the perfect example of great colourblocking.

Let us not forget accessories. I know everyone’s been trying to emphasize minimalism these days, and I know sometimes less can be more but ladies, when it comes to accessories, more is more. Erica accesorized a decent amount, but not so much that it distracted from her outfit. She had on a dainty necklace, a cute double banded silver ring and bracelets on both arms. But I would have to say that her statement accesory was her rose gold Michael Kors watch. If there’s one accessory I believe a girl should have, it’s a statement watch. It pulls an entire look together by instantly adding a classy factor to one’s outfit, and can be easily paired with any other arm candy you have on. Oh, and plus, it’s practical. What time is it? Girl, you know… To finish off the accessories department are the sunglasses. What better way to hide away from the sun than a pair of super chic retro rounded sunglasses with gold detailing?

So you thought you couldn’t pair that bright red blazer with coloured jeans? Or that mustard-coloured knit sweater with a pair of army green khakis? Yes, you can. Colourblock wisely, my little fashionistas, and know that at the end of the day it really doesn’t matter what you wear, it’s whether or not you wear it with confidence. Hold your head high, and strut through campus like you own it, because the world is your runway.
