Bedroom Deco 101: Tips for Creating Your Home Away from Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Decorating your bedroom can be exciting and fun — but it can also be daunting if you don’t know where to start. Here are some tips to help you create a cozy and cheerful haven out of your bedroom.

Customize your bed

Pick a bedding set that adds a little charm to your bedroom! Colour-theme your bed with the rest of your bedroom or choose a set with a cute pattern that you love! Don’t forget to toss in a few extra throw pillows for maximum comfort.

Posters

Your bedroom is your personal space, so you can go all out with putting up posters of people and things that you love! If your landlord is concerned about damaged walls from taping things up, you can use adhesive puddy (I personally use double-sided tape, which I’ve been able to peel off walls without damaging them).

Plant life

Plants are a great way to add some life to your bedroom. Make sure to research what growing conditions your purchased plant prefers, so you can keep it happy and healthy — there’s nothing more disheartening than a dying plant. You can also customize pots and planters to fit the theme of your room. If you’re lacking surface area to place your plants, you can use a hanging planter, which are super adorable too!

Books

Line a bookshelf with your favourite reads or stack up a few fun magazines and books on a bedside table. Avoid the textbooks — those can be saved for the library.

Lighting

Do you prefer white light or warm light? Standing lamps, or overhead lighting? Fairy lights strung along the walls, or coiled in a jar? You have a lot of options when it comes to lighting, so you can make the lighting in your room both practical and stylish!

Plushies

Fill up any empty-looking spaces with a plushie or two. They’ll make your room seem friendlier and make it a more cheerful place to return to after a long day of classes.

Photo wall

Mount your most memorable (and flattering) moments on the wall! You can be creative and place your photos to form a unique shape or pattern too. Alternatively, you can frame your photos and place them on your desk or nightstand instead. Photo frames come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, so choose one that best suits your style!

There are many other ways to decorate and personalize your room as well! What’s important is that you like the outcome, and (hopefully) enjoy the process of decorating it too!
