Back-To-School Style Supplies: Knits

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Around this time of the year, trendy collegiettes start preparing for the upcoming fall fashion. If you think that your back-to-school shopping is done with pens and notebooks, think again! The wise collegiette’s shopping list does not end at there. Just as important are the outfits you wear to class, straight off the runways for the 2014 fall and winter seasons. No need to panic, however, for Her Campus has translated this season’s runway trends below. If you’re in a rush, the one thing you need to know is this: Don’t forget your knits!

Knit Sweaters

This season, one perfect sweater will save you multiple outfit ideas. You might be thinking knit sweaters are inevitable every fall season, so what is so special about them this season? Tons of designers, such as Prabal Grung, Acne, and J.W. Anderson have devoted an extensive amount of spotlight to knit sweaters. Others like Celine, Marc Jacobs, and Michael Kors did so as well, with a special focus on beige-, nude-, pastel-toned knit sweaters. Basically, this means that this fall is the perfect time to bring out your cozy grandma sweaters!

 Normcore

In a fascinating linguistic development, the new keyword for fashion this season is “normcore,” a portmanteau of “normal” and “hardcore.” The word is self-explanatory: the fashion world this season is targeting the fancy-boring and the boring-yet-special looks. Now, how do you achieve this easily in the indecisive Montreal weather? Once again, the answer is think knits! Try throwing on your favourite knit sweater over your summer dress, or matching your dress with knit socks when it gets chilly outside. If you want to be bold, tie your sweater around your neck over your regular outfit. The difference of fabrics and texture will do the magic trick in helping you achieve that normcore look. This is the perfect opportunity to reuse your beloved summer clothes and spice it up a bit with the help of a sweater.

Blanket Beauty

Have you always admired Cara Delevigne, the Victoria’s Secret Angel and the face of Burberry Prorsum? Or Olivia Palermo’s exquisite style? Lucky for us, catching up with their style becomes easier this fall. All you need to do is layer up on your knit shawls, scarves, capes, and sweaters to achieve their look. Make sure to mind your colour scheme to complete a richly coordinated look.

Rocking the knits really can be as easy as the models make it seem. Be careful, however, to drape your knits while keeping your silhouette in mind to avoid looking like you brought your whole bed with you to school. If done right, stocking up on your knits will help you own your campus catwalk this semester.
