6 Tips for Decorating Your Apartment

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

The first two weeks of school are usually one of the most chaotic periods, especially if you’re moving into a new place. Whether you’ve just settled into your dorm, or moved into an apartment, you want the place to feel like an actual home. However, this can be quite difficult because you can’t make any permanent changes to the place if you’re simply leasing it. With that in mind, we have provided the following tips to help you build your dream home. Not only do you use your creativity, but you don’t have to break the bank to create something aesthetically pleasing.

Photographs are the easiest way to transform a place. They fill up dreary white walls with memories and tons of inspiration. Don’t just stick the posters on your wall with sticky tack because there’s a much better way. Instead, frame your photographs and posters because it makes them look much more professional. Furthermore, you can mix and match with frames of different colours, shapes, and sizes. You don’t even need to place them in a vertical line, but create a pattern around the wall. If picture frames aren’t for you, you can create a massive collage effect on your walls with the photographs and posters you own.

Paint your furniture. There’s a good chance that you can’t change the colour of your room. Therefore, the best way to personalize your home is to add colour to all that you find ordinary. Your bed frame, drawers, coffee tables, and nightstand are the best items for this project. If you want to give your home a vintage makeover, using chalk paint will be your best bet and you can get them at any craft store. It’s rustic, yet minimalistic at the same time. However, if you want to just paint your furniture with any colour, you can easily buy paint at RONA.

Ornate your surfaces. Take a good look at the tables or drawers at your place. At this point, you may have repainted them, but there’s still something missing. That’s what coffee table books and flowers are for! Head over to your local Chapters and you’ll find coffee books of just about anything. If you’re a fashionista, they have coffee table books of Vogue covers, designers such as Alexander McQueen or if you love film, there’s a lot of Classical Hollywood ones to choose from. They also have international travel books and plenty more to choose from. If that’s not your thing, simply get a nice vase and put fake flowers into it. You can even go to your local florist to get an actual plant if you desire.

Store things openly. This is more for your bedroom than anything else. Instead of stuffing all your jewelry, accessories, and makeup into a box, you should display it by putting them into mason jars or ornamental trays. It keeps everything organized because you can see where everything is and it’s situated in one place. In fact, you can even make your own jewelry hanger or buy one. You’re using what you already own to make it the perfect place for you.

Get crafty with curtains. You don’t need the sun getting into your eyes when you’re trying to get a little more sleep in the morning, but curtains can also really change a place. There are so many different patterns and colours to choose from. Try to use different curtains for different rooms to offer variety and choose them based on the colour scheme of your room. They don’t even need to be practical. If you think it’ll add to the room, just put it in there. There are sheer and beaded curtains to choose from.

Mix and match different patterns. You can’t really do this for clothes, but you can definitely try this for furniture. Get different cushions and pillows to enhance your couch and a throw is always a good idea. Not only does it make it more comfortable when you and your guests sit down, but you’ll just be much happier when you look at your living room.

These tips are only a few of things you can do with your home. If there’s something different you want to try, just go for it. It’ll be worth it at the end, since it’s going to be your home for a long time.
