5 TV Shows to Get Hooked on During Reading Week

January and February of this semester seem to have flown by and reading week is just around the corner, thankfully. We all finally have the opportunity to sleep in, relax, and catch up on some good television. You may be thinking that there are so many shows out there and only so little time to watch them all, why should you even bother? Well, to help you out, Her Campus has compiled a list of 5 television shows that would be worth your time. Trust me, you’ll be hooked by the end of break and won’t be able to stop watching them till they end!

1. House of Cards

House of Cards is an American political drama television series that stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. The show is available as part of Netflix’s streaming service. Season 2 premiered on February 1, 2013 with 13 episodes, and Season 1 is still available on Netflix. The storyline follows Spacey as Frank Underwood, the House Majority Whip who plans his revenge against those who betrayed him after getting passed over for the appointment of Secretary of State. The show received nine Emmy Award nominations and earned 4 Gold Globe Awards. It’s been quite popular lately, so it’s definitely worth checking out. 

2. Orange Is the New Black

Orange Is the New Black is an American comedy-dram and Netflix Original series created by Jenji Kohan (the creator of Weeds). Catch up on the first season before the second airs this summer, in June 2014. The plot follows Taylor Schilling as Piper Chapman, a woman sentenced to 15 months in a federal prison for smuggling a suitcase full of drug money for her former girlfriend. Rotten Tomatoes has given the show an overall score of 89%, citing that it “is a sharp mix of black humor and dramatic heft, with interesting characters and an intriguing flashback structure.”

3. Scandal

Scandal is an American political thriller television created by Shonda Rhimes (creator of Grey’s Anatomy). The show stars Kerry Washington and is currently on season three, which is to return on February 27, 2014 after a winter hiatus. In 2014, Kerry Washington received a nomination for a Golden Globe Award as Best Actress in a Television Drama Series for her role. Her character, Olivia Pope, owns her own crisis management firm, but she has a steamy and complicated past as White House Communications Director. 

4. Sherlock

A British television crime drama, Sherlock is a present day adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes detective stories created by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat. The show stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson, who work together as consulting detectives to the Metropolitan Police Service to solve various crimes. Currently there have been three series consisting of a total of nine episodes, originally broadcasted on the BBC and later by PBS in the United States. The series has also won the BAFTA award for Best Drama Series.

5. Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is an American action comedy television series created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur. The show stars Andy Samberg as Detective Jake Peralta and his fellow detectives in the 99th Precinct of the New York City Police Department in Brooklyn. Fox is currently airing the first season, which has already won the show a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and another for Andy Samberg as Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy. Andy Samberg is drop-dead hilarious, and Rotten Tomatoes has given the show a score of 88%.
