5 Minute DIY: From Aluminum Cans to Lanterns

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Midterms are coming to an end and we all need some sort of creative outlet before we jump into finals mode. If you have a few recyclable tin cans of coke or beer, and five mins of spare time, look no further! This DIY was inspired by a student budget and procrastination, making it the perfect afternoon activity.

What you will need:

– Empty tin can

– Exacto knife

– Permanent marker or pain of any color

– Small candle

Step 1:

Grab your can and cut strips of the same width length-wise.

Step 2: Press the top of the can down and the strips will bend outward, creating a lanter shaped can. (You’re already halfway done!)

Step 3: Grab your marker and paint and colour in the strips. However, you can skip this step if you’re looking for a more rustic style lantern.

Step 4: Squeeze the candle in through the strips, light it, and voila! You now have a cute little lantern that’s sure to light up your space.

In just five minutes, you have the perfect decoration piece for inside or outside your home, while reusing recyclable cans and getting a little creative.
