5 Cheap Food Places for a First Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

1.  Tim Hortons

Various Locations

Although us first years that are new to campus this fall were never blessed with a Timmy’s in the basement of the Redpath library, there is one conveniently located on the corner of Sherbrooke and University. Coming from New England, I am loyal to Dunkin Donuts, but Tim Horton’s is extremely popular for its bagels, donuts, and coffee. I for one have stumbled into one off of St. Laurent for a 2 am donut, and from what I can remember it was absolutely delicious.

2. Two Chow

3754 St. Laurent

Two Chow might not be the best food, but I would be very surprised to meet someone that has not heard of or tasted their noodles. For jst two dollars, you can get noodles with peanut or teriyaki sauce right on St. Laurent, which makes it a destination for many a McGill student on any late night venture. It’s cheap, usually convenient, and can be good depending on drunkenness.

3. Bouddha Bouddha

3712 St. Laurent

This restaurant and others in Montreal are amazing as they allow customers to bring their own beer and wine, allowing students to enjoy meals out at a cheaper rate than would otherwise be possible. Bouddha Bouddha is conveniently located on St. Laurent and offers delicious and inexpensive thai food.

4. Pizza Pizza

Various Locations

This might be a biased opinion but I actually LOVE Pizza Pizza. Then again, I love all pizza. Pizza is, in my opinion, one of the most perfect combination of carbs that exists. I also think their slice prices are reasonable, and I’m obsessed with the fact that I can get tons of dipping sauces (even though they cost extra, I try to explore a new type each time). Another perk is that not only is there a location on St. Laurent, but they also deliver.

5. Cafeterias

Let’s be real, most of us are either broke or struggling to keep a budget for the weekend. Being a first year on meal plan is kind of nice, because although the food may not be delicious there are at least places on campus where we can swipe mindlessly (for the first month or so!) and always get a meal.

RVC is the most conveniently located place on campus that takes meal plan, but Quesada, Bento, and Premiere Moisson all take flex dollars and are great if you’re craving something specific, however they are a bit more expensive.

BONUS: Samosa Sales

While these are random and are not specifically a “place,” samosa sales definitely deserve an honorary position on this list as providing not only first years but all of McGill with cheap and delicious samosas.
