There are just about 5,300 colleges and universities in the United States alone. This number includes private and public four-year institutions as well as private and public two-year institutions. Should international colleges and universities be considered in this total, the number rises to an obscene amount that makes me appreciate the immensity of the decision I made as a senior in high school.Â
Initiating our pursuit of higher education, high school teachers, college counselors, and peers pushed us to pick the school that was “the best fit” for our personalities and future goals. In essence, those who aided in our college decision-making process knew something we only heard about; Every school has a certain vibe. That vibe translates to a feeling that one recognizes after being immersed in a certain campus community. No matter the reason we chose our school, we have come to recognize the vibe it gives, for better or worse. For some, the vibe was a perfect fit, for others, they had to work to fit the vibe.Â
Every school advertises one area of their school over other areas, but rarely can they articulate what can only be experienced. Personally, I love the vibe all colleges give, and am always up for venturing off my campus and on to others. Luckily, my friends from high school spread out over several states and schools and I have had the opportunity to experience many college campus vibes.Â
I also look forward to visiting more schools, because walking on to every campus is like stepping into a whole new world. The students, sports, activities, clothing styles, and social scenes are all brand new in my mind. No two schools have the same combination of interests, styles, or education methodologies, among other areas of importance. The exciting world of higher education is more than classrooms and homework, but they play a huge role in shaping the vibe of the institution.Â
I love to travel, but my definition of traveling is different then most. I do not think a person has to go far to experience new things. I think they just need something new to experience; something new to feel.Â
