Why Masters of None is a Masterpiece

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marymount chapter.

Last year, Netflix released the comedy drama Masters of None, which has received positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes gave a rating of 8.9 out of 10, and continued to rate the show as  “Exceptionally executed with charm, humor, and heart, Master of None is a refreshingly offbeat take on a familiar premise.” Along with Rotten Tomatoes’ review, here are 8 more reasons for why this show is a true masterpiece, and should be given a chance for everyone who owns a Netflix account.

People of Color

Masters of None can be added to the list of shows that are now exploring a more diverse cast. The main character, Dev Shah (who is played by Aziz Ansari from Parks and Recreation), is an Indian American man who is trying to discover where his place is in the world when it comes to jobs, love, and other random topics. This is a first for an American television show (and for Netflix). He also has an array of friends from all backgrounds such as African American, Asian American and White. Seeing such a variety all on one show is refreshing, and seeing Aziz no longer play the token Indian friend is just what the world needed.

Real Life Events

This show explores real life events that makes it feel so raw and natural. It examines what it is like to be in your late 20’s and early 30’s. From figuring out if you want to settle down, to funny moments with your friends and applying to your dream job; this is something anyone can really relate to. Without giving too much away, you will have an emotional rollercoaster from episode to episode.

Hilarious

This show has its moments where it is just down right funny. Aziz Ansari (Actor/Writer/Creator) has a background in comedy which brings no surprise that his show is going to have comedic relief throughout. The humor that is ingrained in the show, making you yearn for more. This will lead you going through all ten episodes in one night, and then wishing you didn’t once you realize you have to wait for a new season.

Romance

The romance throughout the show will continue to pull you in from each episode. From awkward hook ups, dating, and to being in a relationship; the show covers every aspect of what it is like to date today.  They also cover the issues that are on every early 30/20-something’s mind when it comes to the future and relationships.

Introducing First Generation Kids

With the help of Dev’s parents, they explore what it is like to grow up in a first generation household. The show dedicates an entire episode that will surely warm your heart. If you are growing up in a first generation household, you will surely relate to it. Bonus, Aziz Ansari uses his REAL LIFE parents, which makes any scene with them ten times better.

Addressing Sexism

Instead of turning a blind eye to sexism, this show confronts it head on. It shows how oblivious men can be when dealing with issues of sexism. They learn a valuable lesson by the end that will leave every woman smiling.

Racism in the Media

With such a diverse cast, it would not be right to ignore the blatant racism that goes on today. They explore the racist ideals behind why their are not more people of color on TV. Tackling this issue straight forward has never been down before. This act alone would make any person who is looking for representation in a show applaud.

An Amazing Show

Masters of None is overall well-written, funny, and a good way to spend your Friday night on Netflix. This show gives visibility to those who are usually not shown much in the media. If you are tired of seeing the same white guy with a token person of color friend in the background, check out Masters of None. It’s unconventional, witty, and has the potential to be your favorite show if given a chance.
