The Safety Guide to Online Dating

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marymount chapter.

Online dating is the new way to meet people who are in your area. It is fun but making sure you are safe is an important aspect as well. Here are some tips for going on dates with virtual friends.

  1. A good tip to follow is to either skype, facetime or oovoo with the potential person you are meeting with to verify they match the picture you have seen. This helps weed out the potential catfishers.
  2. Whenever meeting someone online, never let them talk you into meeting before you are ready. Come to an agreement that you both want to mutually meet and plan things out.

  3. When meeting up with the person, ALWAYS meet somewhere in public. A cute coffee shop or even a bookstore can be lowkey but a nice dating spot to meet someone for the first time. Plus, if they do not show up, it will not be obvious.

  4. Always have your own ride there and back. In case the date does not go well, you will not have to depend on that person for a ride back.

  5. Always let a friend know that you are going out and give them basic information about the person you are meeting up with. It is always good to give a first and last name, picture and an update once meeting up.

  6. Always go on your date with your phone charged up, accessible mace and a positive attitude that this is going to be a good time. If you are having second thoughts, do not go. Cancel ahead of time and go with you gut instinct. It is better safe than sorry.
