How To Fall In Love With Your Dorm Room

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marymount chapter.

Your best memories could be spent in your dorm room- your home away from home. However, it can also feel a little lonely, a little uncomfortable, and as far away from home as possible. It’s hard when you start feeling that way because you really don’t have a choice but to be there. Here are a few tricks you can do to get your feng shui back in action and to feel like you’re in control of your space again.

  • Get some Christmas lights! The soft glow from the lights can help soften the mood and make you feel less anxious. It’s a definitely more calming than the harsh fluorescent lights beating down on you.

  • Put up some Decorations! Get a new poster, some affirmations, or drawings. Anything new to look at. Having something new to look at can distract you and improve your mood. Half the fun is going out and looking for said pictures! That in itself can bring you out of a funk, especially if you’re creating the art yourself.

  • Get an essential oil diffuser! Having a new smell around your room, like lavender, can do serious wonders. Lavender is relaxing and can spice up the room. Trust me, anyone that comes into your room will smell it and immediately love it and want to know how you got your room to smell so good!

  • Change your sheets, blankets, and pillows! Sometimes changing up where you sleep can make the whole room seem a little better. Maybe a little change on your bed can make your sleep a little better, significantly increasing your mood.

Hopefully these tips can make your space a little more comfy and more “yours”. It’s hard being away from home. Having a safe haven is so important and crucial to doing well in school where you’re hit with all kinds of stressors. Make your space as unique and special as you want. I hope you can enjoy and love your dorm, regardless of space and location!
