7 Fashion Rules for Summer 2014

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marymount chapter.

Summer is the most liberating season for fashion. Without any climate inhibitions, it’s the perect time to step out of the box (without going too crazy of course). Some of these rules are friendly reminders, while others are sure to shake up your style for the season. These are our 7 rules of summer 2014:

1. Don’t Leave The House With Your Camel!

Where there are high waisted shorts, camel toe will follow.  Proceed with caution collegiates!

2. Maxis > Minis

Mini skirts are so 2006!  Go with the flow this summer and stock up on lengthy maxis that’ll keep you cool and gone with the wind fabulous.

3. The Chicest Things Come In Pairs

And we’re not referring to shoes this time.  Step outside the box with a printed matching set!  Wear tops and bottoms together for a bold statement or mix and match with other items in your closet for an instant outfit upgrade.

4. It’s ALWAYS Appropriate to Throw Shade

Whichever type of “shade” you prefer, sunnies are MANDATORY for the summer months.  Don’t be caught without them!  Popular specs for the season include a bold cat eye, wooden frames, and the classic wayfarers.

5. Don’t Be Basic With Your “Basics”

Basic: An adjective used to describe any person, place, activity involving obscenely obvious behavior, dress, action.

Although the forever basic shorts-and-tee-shirt combination is a steady summer staple in a majority of collegiette’s fashion it’s BORING!  Add some flavor to your basics by accessorizing, wearing different top and bottom combinations (see rule #3), or even updating your basics with embellished tops and fun frilly shorts.

6.  Crop It Correctly

A few fun crop tops are essential for your summer wardrobe.  But you only need the p-e-a-k in “peak-a-boo” for this revealing trend. Full navel exposure is a serious NO, NO.  Paired with a frilly skirt or high waisted short (see rule #1) your ensemble will be sure to set off the scene!

7. Flaunt Your Flawless

Unfortunately the summer months bring out our worst body insecurities. Why waste time and negative energy picking at all the things you don’t like about your body? If you hate your flabby arms, throw on some spaghetti straps.  If you hate your pooch, crop top it like it’s haute (but see rule #6 first). Shake off those insecurites like Chris Brown trying to shake his latest charges!
