To be frank, I’m over it. I’m done with the coats and gloves, the sweaters and thick leggings, and the warm, insulated boots. I’m tired of cold days and even colder nights and well, I guess you could say I’m over winter. I’m more than ready for spring and I can’t wait to embrace the new couture. Although I’m fully aware that warmer weather is, sadly, months away, it doesn’t hurt to start getting your spring wardrobe together now. Here’s a preview of some trends that are sure to be hot this spring.
Pretty pastels
This one should almost go without saying but soft, watercolor shades always seem to make such a refreshing return each spring that I feel the trend deserves a special shout out. As Elle magazine calls them, “easter-egg hues” will be huge this season.
What I love about this trend is how easy it is to incorporate into every outfit. If you’re going for a laid-back look, pair a loose, white V-neck with pale yellow, baby pink or sky blue cropped skinnies. Or, steal the spotlight with a stylish pair of pastel-tone high-waisted shorts like Rachel McAdams did on the February cover of Glamour. Too risqué? Reach a happy medium with a comfy pair of jeans and a feminine, button-up shirt in your favorite pastel hue.
Peplum…pep-what?
That’s exactly what I said when I read that word on a clothing tag a few months ago. But lately I have become very familiar with this adorable trend. Peplum, which is just a flared ruffle sewn onto the waistline of a dress, jacket or skirt, has been popping up everywhere and on everyone – from Keke Palmer to Beyonce to Michelle Obama.
It was even featured in Seventeen magazine’s “spring style cheat sheet.” Personally I couldn’t be happier about this too-cute trend since it’s universally flattering and eye-catching without being over-the-top. Who knew a simple, extra piece of fabric could make such a difference?
Cue the fabulous ‘50s and the sophisticated ‘60s
I’m happy to announce that the sleek, chic shapes and lines that characterized the über stylish eras of fashion legends like Twiggy and Jackie O. are back. According to Elle magazine, the time is now to strut your stuff in boxy, knee-length dresses, A-line midi-skirts, ultra femme Chanel-inspired jackets and cardigans, and “prim embroideries worked in superseductive ‘50s-inspired silhouettes.”
Bring on the bold floral patterns, say hello to crisp, solid color sheaths, and welcome dresses and skirts in of-the-moment gingham (checked) print. I can’t wait to embrace those eras this spring.
A little skin never hurt anyone…
Think back to the early 2000s. Remember how totally in-style it was for celebrities like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Brandy and Monica to flaunt their extra-flat, well-toned tummies in tops that hung inches above their belly buttons? Well, the era of the exposed midsection has returned. I mean, really returned. Expect this spring’s crop tops to be much shorter than last year’s version, which typically exposed just a small strip of the tummy. Understandably, this trend isn’t for everyone but for those yearning to release their inner Brittney (circa 2001), keep this trend from looking, ahem, trashy by pairing it with a cute, light-wash denim jacket or a sharp, colarless coat like Elle suggests.
