What to do if you’re tired of the College Park party scene

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

So, it’s that time of the week again when texts start flooding your inbox about which frat is having a theme rager or which cutie is throwing a party at his apartment on Friday night. The girls in your English 101 class are already talking about the night’s outfit but perhaps, you’re just feeling “eh” and sort of tired of the whole college party scene.

Chances are you are not the only one feeling this way! The college party scene can become monotonous and leave you craving for more out of your college experience. Good news for you this article will surely give you some fun ideas that do not involve a beer soaked floor at a fraternity’s satellite house.  Here are a few of my favorite activities that do not have to involve alcohol:

  1. Visit Washington D.C.

The beauty about being in College Park is that you are a few metro stops away from the Nation’s capital. This is a great opportunity to take advantage of your vicinity to Washington D.C. because you may never have the chance to go to D.C whenever once you graduate.

So what to do in D.C.? The choices are endless, whether it is exploring the art scene, restaurants or stores  in DC you are guaranteed an experience you won’t find here in College Park. Some of my favorite parts of D.C are Georgetown, DuPont circle, Foggy Bottom and Chinatown. Georgetown and Chinatown are great for shopping if you want to hit the high end stores, Georgetown especially. If you are looking for a less expensive D.C. experience try watching a play at the Shakespeare theater. Their plays are modernized and quite affordable too!

  1. Movie night with your girls (or guy)

Ahh the typical movie night cliché. I’m sure every article that features activities that don’t involve going out mentions this! But it is one that I can never emphasize enough! Movie nights are not only fun for spending time with your friends or enjoying a good movie but they also provide a mental break. We all know you need that as a hardworking college girl ! So give yourself time to unwind and put your mind towards something mindless, this is the easiest therapy you can do for yourself and trust me your mind needs it! So grab some popcorn and a blanket, forget about the week’s workload because soon enough it will be starting again!

  1. Terpzone

Yes! Terpzone is a fun place to spend your Friday evening with friends. Not many people utilize this hidden gem of a recreational service. The plethora of bowling, pool, and gaming options make it a fun way to get competitive! This is a great way to take advantage of all the fun resources that are available to you on campus without the hassle of leaving campus if you don’t have transportation or breaking the bank. Also, check out the massive TV.s that play sports around the clock.

  1. Be a Chef for a night

Cooking can be fun when you bring a group of friends together and try fun new recipes. Pinterest has A LOT of fun and mouth watering ideas which are bound to be tasty. If you are running low on cash, you can even search for affordable recipes and believe me, there are plenty! So, take over your dorm’s kitchen for the night and cook something mouthwatering!

  1. Search for activities on Groupon or Living Social.

These websites are great for getting a big group of friends together. The bigger the group, the better the experience! And the Price! These websites have endless deals on fun ideas such as plays, yoga classes and cruises. It is like every college girl’s prayers answered, more fun without putting a big dent in your wallet!
