The Times… They Are a-Changin’: A Spotlight for Activism on Campus and Beyond

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

Junior government and politics major Sierra Dischel is the co-president of the UMD chapter of RESULTS, a grassroots international organization that focuses on educating the public on how we can economically solve poverty. I sat down with this poised and enthusiastic young lady to talk about the organization, as well as what it has taught her about getting involved.

Q: Tell me a bit more about RESULTS. What is it really all about?

A: We focus our efforts on education and advocacy for finding solutions for poverty and hunger. It is important that we give back to our local community, as well as our global community. We are trying to reach both levels through use of public service and the lobbying of government officials.

Q: How did you hear about RESULTS and get involved?

A: The Chapter here at UMD has existed for several years now. I first learned of its existence at the annual Interest Fair for clubs and organizations when I came to College Park. I wanted to give back to the community and utilize my interest of helping laws benefit others, so this was the right fit for me. There are so many different ways to give back, so make sure you find a way you are passionate about.

Q: What are some projects RESULTS has done in the past?

A: Last year we had a bake sale where we gave brownies to students who would write to their congressman in support of the “Help Every Mother and Child” Act. We also held a workshop where we discussed how to reach out to other students and we explored various campaigns such as the “Poverty is Sexist” platform, which highlights how being poor is more prevalent amongst women. We want to grow our numbers this year and try new things!

Q: How has your involvement changed you as a person, and why do you think it is important to be socially active?

A: I have learned that we all have voices. We can choose to be silent while others suffer, or we can speak up and take a stand. When you see the numbers and hear the stories, you just know it is your duty to do something. RESULTS has given me the skills to make changes and has taught me the process on how to do so. It has also given me lots of confidence to make a difference!

RESULTS meets on Tuesdays in Jimenez, with official times this school year TBA. For more information, e-mail results@umd.edu.
