Party Like It’s Super Bowl XLV

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

Whether you’re planning on waving your Terrible Towel, sporting your cheese head or not watching the game at all on Super Bowl Sunday, there’s reason to be excited. Football season’s main event means there’s an excuse to party. Although no local teams made it to the big game this year, the Super Bowl and its accompanying commercials will have UMD students gathered around the tube this Sunday.

If you’ve got party planning in your genes, you might want to take the opportunity to throw a viewing party, complete with snacks and maybe even decorations if you’re feeling ambitious. While the theme is sort of a no-brainer, you can get creative with the food.  Typical finger food favorites are delicious and easy to munch on while keeping a focus on the big screen. Buffalo wings, chili, chips and dip are all classic options for your guests to enjoy. For dessert, you could try incorporating the teams’ colors or logos into traditional cookies, brownies or cupcakes. Another game day favorite is a football field cake, complete with turf, end zones and even goal posts. Deck out your apartment, house or even your dorm room with streamers, football cut outs or balloons. Party stores offer pretty elaborate Super Bowl decorating options, but if you’re looking to keep it simple (and cheap) the dollar store has fun and easy décor to help spice up your Super Bowl Sunday.

For those of you who lack the culinary skills or motivation to host a Super Bowl party of your own, bars offer a great alternative. Although the pickings are currently slim on Route One, two of UMD’s favorite watering holes will be open and ready for business on Super Bowl Sunday. Just like any other Sunday night, Cornerstone will be serving up its Big Ass Drafts for the big game and managers say they’ll likely offer other food and drink specials too. Bentley’s, known for being more of a sports bar, is likely to offer similar specials.

For those of you who are die-hard football fans looking for a bona fide sports bar, you may have to do a little traveling. The Greene Turtle Sports Bar and Grille just opened its doors last month in Olney, Md. Fans can watch the game on TVs large and small while enjoying a cold drink and a juicy burger.

Looney’s Pub in Maple Lawn is hosting happy hour all day long in celebration of Super Bowl Sunday. Even if you’re not into the bar scene, Looney’s has a full menu and restaurant-style seating so you can watch the game and enjoy your meal at the same time.

Because let’s be honest: Whether you’re a Steelers fan or a Packers fan or if you’re just tuning in for the hilarious commercials, Super Bowl Sunday is just another excuse to party.
