Nutrition Expert Joy Bauer Visits UMD

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

Joy Bauer, real life celebrity nutritionist and health expert for NBC and the Today Show, had an appearance in UMD Saturday, March 28.

The event was hosted by Kappa Delta Sorority in the Xfinity Center. The event was promoted to raise money for KD’s philanthropic foundation Prevent Child Abuse America and raise awareness on nutritional eating in college and in life.

“The Joy Bauer event was a complete success! She was so funny and engaging that it made what she was saying about eating healthy really interesting,” said Julia Janetti, Kappa Delta Community Service chair.

“It was the most exciting feeling knowing that I got to invite my mom something that I was so proud of,” said Jesse Bauer, daughter of the speaker and Kappa Delta PR chair. “All of the girls in KD worked so hard to put the event together and I am so happy that I could help raise money for PCAA but introducing my mom to the Kappa Delta  community!”

The event helped KD raise over $3000 dollars for PCAA.

Remaining in shape in college can become a very difficult and unattainable task. We drink Zelko, drunk eat Slices, and when we are stuck at McKeldin for the night, binge eat South Campus diner wraps and fries. Eating right, or thinking about eating healthy generally isn’t a prominent task on our minds. However, as Joy Bauer explains staying nutritious and finding a balance between the Freshman 15 and staying in shape is not as hard as we tend to imagine.

Joy Bauer identifies five simple steps us as college students can abuse to drop a few pounds, and feel a little better about how we look at school.

  1. Take your top off
  • Okay so don’t get ahead of yourself because this doesn’t mean Joy is telling us to take our tops off and get loose on Terrapin Tuesday at Turf.
  • The next time we eat a sandwich or order a burger from Bobby’s we need to “Go Topless,” as in take the top bun off.
  • This simple task reduces our daily calorie count and the burger will still taste just as yummy with just a bottom bun
  1. Drink two cups of water before dinner
  • When it comes to dinner time after a long day of classes and moving around, we are ready to chow down on a nice dinner feast
  • The problem in American culture is we tend to overeat at dinner time because we don’t give ourselves the proper time to digest
  • Joy explains that if we drink two cups of water before dinner we will already have a tiny fullness in our stomachs, which will help to allow ourselves time to digest. We can still enjoy our dinners but we won’t eat as much because we had a little liquid to fill us up.
  1. Swap the rice and pasta for quinoa
  • Quinoa is one of those grains that is delicious and tastes exactly like rice without the white grain quality and calorie count
  • Us college students truly won’t notice the difference between the two grains and will be left feeling a little lighter without the heavy pasta or rice on our plates
  1. Make the right choice when eating out
  • No matter what cuisine or restaurant you may be in the mood for, there is always a healthier option to swap out for a fatty one
  • For example, a burger joint: order a turkey or veggie burger instead of the fatty cow meat and put a slice of tomato and lettuce as the top layer instead of the top bun. Such a simple swap for the same delicious meal.
  1. Don’t waste your calories in the form of liquid
  • Water has ZERO calories
  • Why waste your calories on a Starbucks Caramel Macchiato that won’t fill you up in the slightest when you can instead use up your calories to eat actual food?
  • Yes, us college students still need our daily forms of caffeine but there are better, more nutritional options to drink rather than a Frappuccino.
  • Have a simple coffee with some almond milk and Splenda. The energy boost will remain the same and you won’t be left with the sugary content in your tummy.
  • Let’s be smart and avoid the drinks that are truly bad for our health in the first place. Drink water. Stay hydrated. Avoid carbonated drinks that have zero nutritional value.

Joy explains these are just a few of her tips to staying in shape at school and having a nutritious diet. Everyone who attended the event enjoyed her talk extremely and most people (AKA me) will be using her tips now and in the future.
