Little Mix’s “Confetti” is Just the Album We Needed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

Little Mix just released their sixth studio album, “Confetti”, and it’s the perfect pop album. It’s been nine years since the band won “The X Factor (UK)” and the band is stronger than ever. Jade Thirlwall, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jesy Nelson, and Perrie Edwards, better known as Little Mix, are known for their catchy songs, flawless harmonies and their passion for female empowerment. Throughout the album, the members of Little Mix openly express themselves about relationships, their sexuality and the power of their friendship.

The album kicks off with “Break Up Song,” the album’s lead single, released in March. The song combines an 80’s sound with a modern one, setting the tone for the rest of the album. “Break Up Song” is an empowering song about coming back stronger from a break up and not dwelling on the past.

“Break Up Song” is followed by “Holiday,” which is a great song for the summer. While the first song on the album focuses on breakups, “Holiday” is about a relationship that makes you feel like you’re constantly on vacation.

“Sweet Melody,” is one of my personal favorites. Not only is the music video amazing, but the song is also insanely catchy.“Sweet Melody” is about being in love with someone who did not turn out to be who you expected and learning to not be gullible in a relationship. The song is a representation of how much the members of Little Mix have grown from past relationships.

“Not a Pop Song” showcases the band’s growth and how far they’ve come over the years. The lyrics, “If I’m a guilty pleasure, I want this life forever” stand out, as this is their way of saying that they’ve had enough of being told that their music is someone’s guilty pleasure. Little Mix want to be appreciated and recognized for their talent, not hear that someone is embarrassed of listening to their music. In this song, they declare just that. “Not a Pop Song” has an empowering message about not letting others control you and sticking up for yourself.

“Gloves Up” is another one of the best songs on the album, and resembles some of their older songs like “Salute.” The song is about going after your dreams and not letting anyone get in the way of that. The chorus is explosive and would be incredible to hear live.  Unfortunately, the only ballad on the album is “My Love Won’t Let You Down.” If there’s one thing Little Mix knows how to do, it’s performing stunning ballads. In this song, the girls sing about sticking together and being there for each other no matter what. The lyrics “I’ll come runnin’ when you call out my name, and it’ll always be this way,” are a promise that the girls will do anything for each other. The song also reflects on the hardships they have gone through in the past, but shows that they’ve made it through together. It’s amazing to see a band where you can tell how close all of the members are and how much love they have for each other.

As with any Little Mix album, “Confetti” is full of beautiful harmonies. Songs like “A Mess (Happy 4 U),” “If You Want my Love,” and “Breathe” showcase the group’s talent and the hard work they put into making sure every song is perfect. All of their voices blend together beautifully and focusing on the harmonies while listening to the album is an amazing experience.

The upbeat songs and empowering lyrics are the perfect confidence boost. If you haven’t given Little Mix a chance, now is the time as this album is arguably some of their best work yet.
