Is Lingerie Important? What Guys Think About You Dressing Up In the Bedroom

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

So ladies I guess you can officially consider me your financial adviser. I spent the past couple of days surveying guys across campus to gather their opinions on lingerie. Yes, lingerie! No, I did not ask them if they wear it or what color they prefer, but I was purely interested in their opinion on whether purchasing lingerie is necessary.

Major retailers such as Victoria’s Secret, Macy’s, Bloomingdales, and Nordstrom have extensive lingerie sections with a variety of lingerie garments including brassieres, laced thongs, g-strings, sexy nightwear, and corsets.

Some of these items can cost you up to $60, sometimes even more especially at Victoria’s Secret where some items run close to $100. Now if you will allow me to be completely honest…. doesn’t it just come off in 25 seconds anyway? At least that’s what I was told by a few of the guys.

“I don’t really care, but it is true that it just comes off in 10 seconds,” said freshman criminology major Jordan Hsieh.

I am not trying to make sexual activity any less enjoyable but purely trying to understand why it is necessary to spend $60 on something if they are not going to pay much attention to it for very long. It is not as though you can wear it all the time. I personally enjoy shopping for intimates, but I prefer to buy the normal bra and panty set, which is still very cute, just not too fancy.

Not all guys have this sentiment that lingerie is pointless. They seem to understand that lingerie not only excites the guy, but also makes women feel good about themselves. When I wear cute underwear and bra sets that accentuate my figure it really makes me feel good about myself and excited to show my significant other.

Sophomore biology major Matt Choman said, “I think girls should wear lingerie because it shows that they are trying to get our attention and it shows effort on their part.”

Based off of the data I gathered, guys are pretty split half and half on the lingerie issue and as usual can’t make up their mind. Just kidding, but several guys did express to me that expensive lingerie could be necessary, but only during special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, even Halloween.

“If you want something nice that is cool, but $60-70 is too much,” sophomore journalism major Marquis Goodwin said. “It’s situational though not an everyday thing, it’s a special occasion thing,”

So the consensus is, ladies, it actually depends on the guy. Ask him if he thinks it’s necessary for you to purchase lingerie or if he prefers the cute bare minimum. Maybe your guy prefers the nice surprise on special occasions or maybe he thinks you should just wait to purchase it when you’re married and living together. Honestly if you’re in front of him and he cares about you, I’m sure it will not matter what you are wearing or not wearing.
