The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 is Finally Here

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

Hunger Games fanatics will unite Friday when Mockingjay, the third and final book in the series by Suzanne Collins, hits theaters.

Students have anxiously waited a year for Mockingjay to come out since the last movie, Catching Fire, came out in November 2013.

Shannon Hall and her friends are going to see the movie the day it opens. “Mockingjay was my favorite. Reading the book, I felt like I never knew what was going to happen next,” the sophomore international business major, said.

Jaycee Hart, a freshman public health science major, said that since she lives on campus without a car, seeing the movie the day it comes out is unlikely, but she will definitely see it as soon as possible.

Hart thought the book was a perfect conclusion to the series and was not as sensational as the others.

In this movie, Katniss awakens in District 13 after being rescued from the arena of the Third Quarter Quell. The district has been feeding the rebellion against the Capitol, who had been mandating and conducting the Hunger Games every year. Katniss becomes a leader in District 13 and the symbol of the rebellion, a “mockingjay.”

The Capitol captured Peeta, Katniss’ partner from the games, so as the mockingjay Katniss fights back in an action-packed plot that cannot be missed.

“I think the twist with Peeta being captured by the Capitol was really interesting,” Hall said.

But there has been controversy over the writers’ decision to split the last book into two movies, which has been common recently such as with the Harry Potter and Twilight series.

“I didn’t think it was necessary to separate it into two movies because the book isn’t that long,” sophomore computer science major Nouran Younis said.

Hall agreed, but felt that it made sense for the financial aspect. “I also get that they’re trying to make it include every detail from the book,” she said.

Hart explained that Mockingjay had a dense plot with a lot happening at once, so she understood the need to make two movies. “I think it would do an injustice to the whole series if they put it all together in one movie,” she said.

Younis expects that the movie will capture all of the excitement in the book with intense action scenes.

Hart expects high quality special effects. “In the other movies, I thought that was what they did best,” she said.

Students who are dying to know how Katniss’ story ends will have to wait until November 20, 2015 when Mockingjay: Part 2 is released.
