House Music in the White House

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

Going to The University of Maryland has its obvious perks: a great campus, endless clubs and activities, and a diverse group of students. But, looking beyond the obvious benefits of this campus, our location is prime. No, I’m not talking about Prince Georges County; I’m talking about Washington, D.C.

Yes it is the home of our nation’s president, the Washington Monument, and so much American history. But D.C. also houses some of the best nightclubs in the country, and serves as an outlet in examining the newest trend in music: House. House music has an up-tempo, electronic sound that is centered around its ability to get its listeners on the dance floor.

House, as it is called for short, has begun to take on something of a subculture all of its own over the last few years. With its electronic beats and intense chorus drops, going to see DJ Tiesto, at Club Fur is fast becoming a popular weekend activity for many UMD students. After all, many of the venues that host DJs like Tiesto, Avicii, and Calvin Harris, are 18+, leaving the House revolution to infiltrate even its underage fan base. And, as any fan knows, going to a House concert is not like a normal concert experience.

It goes beyond focusing on the beats which will be bouncing in your head, but what outfit you choose to wear is just as important as the DJ you are going to see. Think of it as a “Tight n’ Bright” party on a concert-level scale. Anything neon or white, will be perfect to glow along with the beats in the black light. You may have questioned some of the stores in Prince Georges Plaza, but as it turns out, this is a hidden trove for finding great outfits for events like this.

Don’t be scared to pop into LVL X and grab a neon bandeau or an off-the-shoulder top in a bright yellow. Also, if online shopping is your weakness, hit the American Apparel site for a cute crop top or mini skirt in an unconventional print. Most of the time the venues do get a little hot and sweaty, so wearing your best dress wouldn’t work for this occasion anyway; use a house concert as a way to take your fashion choices to a more fun and funky level than you normally would.

I have provided some photos my friends and I at various house concerts, and as you can clearly see, those are not outfits considered typical for a night out. House music and concerts are all about letting go, listening to DJ’s play great sets of music, and enjoying the night with your friends. So girls, grab your hot pink shorts and D.C. Metro ticket, and head to Washington D.C. to experience this revolution for yourself! It is an experience that is sure to change your mind about D.C. nightlife and make any House music skeptic a new fan.
