After years of delayed openings, University of Maryland students looking for fun, inexpensive shows can now look to The Fillmore Silver Spring. This fall, a lineup of top artists is coming to the region’s newest concert venue.

The LiveNation owned Fillmore Silver Spring, located just 20 minutes away from campus in Silver Spring, hopes to bring in thousands of people of all ages and who like different genres of music. The Fillmore Silver Spring can fit approximately 2,000 people in a standing only area according to the official website.

Since opening on September 15th, Fillmore Silver Spring has featured a variety of artists including Mary J. Blige on opening night, two nights of famous DJ Deadmau5, Pretty Lights, Jay Sean, and Joe Jonas.

“It was a cool venue architecturally,” sophomore journalism major Sarah Polus said, commenting on her experience attending Pretty Lights on Sept. 29. “It had an interesting mix of classic wood and chandeliers and modern lighting and bars that blended together really well. I liked how it offered two options for watching the show—I was front row for a bit then opted to chill by the bar and both were fun. I loved how close you could get to the stage too.”

In October, acts expected to perform include Blue October, Mayday Parade, Bush, Chevelle, J. Cole, Never Shout Never, Wale, and Ziggy Marley. Fillmore Silver Spring keeps the excitement going with Asking Alexandria, LMFAO, Simple Plan, Mac Miller, and Devil Wears Prada in November and December. Since Silver Spring is not far from College Park it allows students who were unavailable to see Mac Miller here on campus another opportunity to see him play.

Sophomore Psychology major Emiy Rosen says, “Since I couldn’t see him in College Park it’s thrilling that he’s playing in a venue so close.”

Being close to the Silver Spring station on the Red Line of the D.C. Metro System, students can easily hop on the metro to reach the Fillmore Silver Spring. Silver Spring also offers public parking garages close to the venue if students would rather drive to the show. Polus adds, “My only complaint about my time was getting there. We had to take a taxi both ways because the metro stops running at midnight during the weekend so it was 25 dollars each way.”

The Fillmore Silver Spring will be the newest venue to offer an alternative to the night scene of house parties and bars in College Park. Students looking for a fun concert without the chaos of a 10,000-person concert like Tiesto and Avicii can look to the Fillmore Silver Spring for shows like this.

Junior psychology major Leyla Babaturk says, “It’s nice to have the option of getting out of College Park sometimes and since the metro runs to Silver Spring the Fillmore could be a fun and easy alternative to CP and DC nightlife. I could easily see myself going there.”
