BLONDSHELL: A deep dive into the latest album and escapades

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

BLONDSHELL is an emerging artist known for her vibrant musical style. Born and raised in New York, she has been releasing music since 2022, captivating audiences with her unique blend of indie rock. In an exclusive interview, I had the opportunity to sit down with her as she unveils the inspiration behind her latest self-titled album, “BLONDSHELL,” as she gears up for her tour. She provides a glimpse into her creative process offering fans an intimate perspective on her newest tracks. From studio explorations to on-stage escapades, BLONDSHELL discusses how diving into the soul of her music provides a unique connection between her and her audience.

When asked about her journey with the writing process, BLONDSHELL opens up, stating “And there was a lot that I wanted to say about it, because I think i was holding in so much about just like relationship turmoil…It was really kind of cathartic for me to make for sure.” She sheds light on the therapeutic nature of her expression and reveals the vulnerability behind her music. BLONDSHELL goes on to mention that she found inspiration behind heartbreak in various forms. She explains that heartbreak doesn’t necessarily mean that it has to look like you were dumped, and her music portrays that emotion in a variety of ways.

With the ongoing tour, she spoke about what she’s most excited about and what fans can expect. Talking about the various historic venues she’ll be playing at for the first time, she mentions the shows being personal and a performance of her album. “I never know what to say when someone asks, ‘What can people expect?’ It’s just playing the songs on the album and trying to make it come to life.”

When asked about how she thinks her music has evolved she said, “I think so much of getting better at reading or writing for me has been figuring out how to have it come out the way that’s closest to what it was like in my head.” She explains that the most difficult part of putting out music is figuring out how to convey your vision. When beginning to piece the album together, as she started showing her friends some of the songs, the feedback she was receiving mentioned her music sounding more personal and relatable. BLONDSHELL mentions that this time around, there wasn’t another identity to portray and that was her biggest sign of change via her music. She states that her favorite part of working on the album and preparing for tour was the satisfaction of putting out music true to herself. She mentioned not feeling this sense of desperation that typically surrounded being in the public eye, “I do feel proud of it. And so that was one of the best feelings that I had.”

In a series of rapid fire questions, BLONDSHELL states that if she could work with any artist it would hands-down be Miley Cyrus. Personally, I would love to see a BLONDSHELL/Miley collab; with two similar yet unique styles, I think their music would definitely be a hit. Her favorite song on the album is “Substance,” describing it as the closest to her personal goals with the album and how direct it is in her message. She also touches upon her musical inspirations and how her taste has changed over the years. From growing up listening to primarily rock, going through a period of time where she moved on to different styles and coming back to those originals as an adult gave her a new perspective and drove her inspiration behind the intense music.

Ending with discussing the impact of live performances, BLONDSHELL describes how essential it is to be able to transform music past the studio. “Oh my god, it’s so important that I think it’s the most important thing in the world.” She talks about how recorded music made her fall in love with music in the first place, describing that as she grew up going to live shows helped her get in touch with a different world of music she wasn’t previously exposed to.

The evolution of BLONDSHELL’s music has become a captivating narrative and how breaking away from an alternate identity helped her create more personal music and connect with her fans. Unveiling her latest work, she shares the satisfaction of crafting music that many people were able to relate to. Her journey from falling in love with recorded music to doing her own live shows in venues she’s dreamed of has propelled her career and grown her audience.
