90s Grunge Looks Trending Right Now

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

If you’re a devoted Tumblr enthusiast like myself, the unforgettable influence of grunge lookbook creators on fall season wardrobe transitions still resonates with you.

2023 has been filled with nothing but nostalgic throwbacks making a comeback in the world of fashion. From the resurrection of iconic low rise jeans to Juicy Couture velour tracksuits, the early girly 2000s trends made some big noise this summer. However, as we start to fully embrace autumn, we are starting to see more of the edgy, grunge fashion looks continue to evolve and thrive.

The origin of this style traces back to the bold emergence of MTV artists in the 90s. Rock bands such as Alice In Chains, Nirvana and Hole became the prominent faces of grunge. The infamous frontman of Nirvana Kurt Cobain is well-remembered for rocking the stage in distressed ripped jeans, flannel shirts and band tees. Similarly, his wife and frontwoman of Hole Courtney Love became an inspiration for young women everywhere who wanted to incorporate glam into a previously edgy look. The grunge movement eventually broke apart into fashion subgenres, which welcomed leather pieces, combat boots and choker necklaces. Today, distressed clothing is paired with high-fashion pieces; the spirit of grunge lives on.

Looking for new ways to spice up your wardrobe this fall by incorporating some darker tones, while still staying comfy and exploring modernized, girly subgenres? I’ve got you covered.

1. Fishnet Stockings & Dress Combo

If you prefer grunge on the feminine side, you can never go wrong with a lace up slip dress paired with some black fishnet stockings. A stylish alternative is sheer stockings, which you can rip yourself if you’re up for a little diy fun. There are plenty of affordable options on Amazon, and oversized Jackets are great pairings for this outfit to stay cozy.

For those who want to add that modern twist, just take some inspiration from popstar Olivia Rodrigo’s stage outfit for the 64th Annual Grammy Awards. She incorporated some fun accessories to elevate the look – don’t be afraid to layer on some silver chains.

2. Put the combat boots away; platforms are are in

I could not survive more than an hour trying to walk on campus in high heels. Lucky for you, the new wave of platform boots is much more comfortable. Some of my favorite platform boots are DEMONIA’s Shaker-65 Amazon also offers some great dupes for those looking for something on a budget.

Pro tip for my thrifting girlies: Depop is the new face of online thrifting. You can find and even upcycle many vintage platform boots on the low for a great fare, prices are negotiable!

3. Denim: Play It Safe

If you want something versatile but casual, ripped, baggy denim jeans and a band tee is the easiest authentic grunge look. It takes minimal effort to achieve. Bonus points if you layer up with a leather jacket and chunky boots when it gets chilly.

4. Leather Skirts

Got a night out and want to dress up? Leather skirts will definitely have people turning heads. I find that they are best paired with striped, oversized sweaters and leather jackets.

For my “Gossip Girl” fans, consider this living out your Little J moment. Former actress and frontwoman of The Pretty Reckless Taylor Momsen’s Samantha Thavasa photoshoot outfit is an absolute leather slay that many Alternative TikTok creators are taking inspo from right now.

5. Corset Tops

You can wear corset tops with pretty much everything. My personal favorite combo for this one is black vinyl pants and a motorcycle jacket.

6. Baggy Cargo Pants

Loose fitting clothing is a shocking new wave; we’ve come a long way from the ripped skinny jeans era. Baggy Cargo Pants are so comfortable and with the amount of pockets they come with, you’ll never have to worry about losing your airpods on campus again. To complete the grunge look, try pairing these with a cropped flannel shirt and a belt.

7. 5 Minute Grunge Smokey Eye Finish

Achieving that perfect smokey eye to finish your look can be an annoying process, but this quick tutorial by Macy Lycan shows you how you can achieve it effortlessly when in a hurry. Lycan uses the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer to start by priming the eyes, then goes in with the lovely  NYX Avant Pop Nouveau Chic palette to utilize those autumn toned red and brown colors.

As Black Friday approaches, make sure you seize the opportunity to grab some of these pieces to set you apart from the crowd this fall. Stay stylish, stay fierce and embrace your love for the 90s this month with these grunge-inspired looks.
