7 Things Your Parents Wouldn’t Want To See On Your Instagram

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

Everyone has different kinds of parents, and as these parents delve into the world of social media, specifically Instagram, they might treat your photos differently. And let’s face it, if your parents do download an Instagram, they WILL follow you. It’s inevitable.

There are the parents who don’t care about what you post on social media and post pictures of you taking shots with them on their personal Facebook pages.

However, there are those over-bearing parents who would have a heart attack on the spot if they saw a picture of you with a bottle of Zelko or making out with your favorite frat boy. As college students, sometimes we want to post a picture of us doing an ice luge or in our cute outfit from a Playboy themed social. We need to decide what is acceptable for our parents to see on our Instagram and what is taking it a little too far. Even the most relaxed parents still wouldn’t want their daughter to portray themselves in an unprofessional manner. Here is what not to post a picture of:

1)   Doing a beer bong

Posting a picture of yourself doing a beer bong isn’t only illegal if you’re under 21 but it just looks wrong… If your parents don’t know what a beer bong is they will be extremely confused and concerned and probably look a little bit like this:

When they see this:

2)   Wearing any type of underwear

I feel like this should be self-explanatory… I know you want to show the world the sexy lingerie you wore to the Playboy or “pajama party” social… but just don’t do it.

I would assume this is how your father would react if he saw that…

3) Throwing up the middle finger

This one isn’t so bad but your parents may wonder who is she mad at? Is someone messing with my daughter? Is my daughter turning “emo?” Is it her against the world? And they may drive all the way to college just to make sure no one is messing with you or to make sure you aren’t in an “it’s me against the world phase.” If you don’t want any of the above to happen… just refrain from flipping off Instagram.  Just, “throw what you know” or something.

4)   Making out with a boy

First of all this just takes PDA to a whole new level, not only do we have to worry about PDA at a party but we also have to worry about internet PDA? If your dad sees this he may demand to meet the boy you are making out with… and this might happen

5)  An exceptionally slutty caption to your exceptionally slutty photo

I know when you put up an extremely sexy picture of you and your best friends, you want a caption that accompanies it well, but it may be best to just let the picture speak for itself. You don’t need to caption it “I like my kisses down low” or “Give it to me baby nice and slow.” Your parents don’t need to know that the picture is insinuating something and when they read it they will probably look a little like this…

6) Screenshots of seriously inappropriate conversations with your friends

You and your friends may think you are hilarious talking about your walk of shame or what you did last night but come on… You’re not having a conversation with your parents about this for a reason… If your mother sees that you aren’t the perfect lady she raised, this is what you will get:

7) Getting a piercing or tattoo your parents wouldn’t approve of

If you aren’t telling your parents that you are getting a Chinese symbol tattooed to your shoulder or your belly button pierced, then why would you post it on the Internet? If one of your parents is scrolling through their timeline and comes across a picture of you being pierced by an emo looking man with his eyebrow pierced, they will do a double take and probably look a little but like this:

So ladies, if you want your parents to stay proud of you and still think that you are the perfect college student that isn’t doing anything wrong and studies on Tuesday nights (instead of going to Loose Tuesdays), then refrain from posting pictures of anything listed above. It will make your lives easier and help your parents sleep at night.
